Decided to order myself a kabar parangatan this coming Monday when I get paid.what do the other beckerheads think of this blade ?

It's next on my list. Should have one this month sometime. Really curious about this blade. I recently got a potbelly and like the handles.

I got one at the last gathering, I'm glad I did. The damned thing is a vegetation demolishing machine! I didn't think I'd like the handles and honestly didn't like them until I started using it. You can definitely adapt to the tool. I'd be interested to get a set of Steve's actual handmade handles on it.

I saw the parangatang on Zombie Go Boom, they do a lot of reviews on KA-BAR items. If their review is correct that the handle is slick when it gets wet, then I'd probably take several feet of paracord, run it through the lanyard hole, loop it back over the front of the handle, and cobra stitch it down tight for a fabric D guard to try and serve as a hand retainer.

Haha, yeah it preformed awesomely... I wonder if wrapping the handle with grip tape then adding a few loops of shock cord would do the trick

The Parangatang is thinner stock than the Pot Belly, so Liners might help the handles feel better.
I know that personally the Pot Belly feels pretty nice in hand, but to me, the Parangatand felt a bit thin. So I would probably do liners, and maybe wrap.

Are the scales on the parangatang interchangeable with the scales on some of the ZK line of knives? Because if they are I'm tempted to get one and slap some black ones on.

I'm probably in the minority - I was very excited to get one so I ordered one, received it and it went back the next day. Its a nice well made piece of steel, and the handles do take some getting used to, but it just didn't feel particularly "alive" in my hands. It just didn't speak to me on air swings, unlike kukris, genuine malaysian parangs, or my Svord Bush Machete.

Heck I'd chose the Gerber BG Parang full size over this one....

Yes it chops woods, but for me, there were better designs out there (a Patrol Machete would easily be one of them!!)

Hey Murph, how does it compare to the Patrol Machete?

Jeremy

Dres, I'll get some pix and possibly a side by side tomorrow after work.

I'd really like to see one of these with Steve's handmade handles. The grips as they are don't feel slick to me, but I've been dry handed or gloved every time.

Well I've just ordered a parangatang , a black kabar dozier folding hunter with thumb notch , and a cold steel micro recon 1 spear point in green :)

Ok, here are the comparison pix. They're nothing spectacular, but they'll give you an idea of the similarities and differences.

I was actually surprised to find they are the same length. The Patrol Machete feels longer, it's definitely more forward heavy. Sheaths, eh y'know the deal, they all could use improvement. I'd be happy using either of these, but feel the Patrol machete would do better in the hardwoods. Either would be even in greener vegetation.

I thought the word was "No new BK6 because it was too big to make"? Yet the Parangatang is nearly the same size as a 6? Hhmmm. Wazup????

That is what I was getting at with my earlier question.

Looks like we have leverage now?

Jeremy

One can hope that it's in the works and they're being quite about it. Hope and email, lots of emails.

Well, I believe that was the reason before we brought the ZK line and larger Ka-Bar line back home to CONUS.
