I'm happy, but am I stupid?

Hair -

I think you having fun yanking our chains this happy holiday season. And it sure worked from all the responses you got. Is this a contest of some sort to see who get the most reponses? Hee hee!

If you are serious then I think it is not smart to borrow money to buy anything like this unless you are going to become a dealer who buys in quantity for resale. IMHO.

If someone offered me a complete collection of "Gerber Paul" knives for $50 each I'd run to the bank an borrow whatever it took but again that is an exception to the rule.

I think you already know the answer to the question, "Which is more important and satisfying, buying the stuff or the stuff itself?"

Is the the "chase" or the "kill" that floats your boat?

Hiya!

Even if someone never took up psych (I did) there's always that natural "Uh-oh" gut feeling whenever someone says "I love instant gratification, and I hate waiting" regardless of whatever the object is they're fixated on (I often wonder what people who participate in this forum would like to have? Hmmmmm . . .)

I do wholeheartedly agree on what some have said earlier about the fun in preparing for or saving-up for them. Like the old saying goes: "half the fun is getting there" or in this case, getting them.

Good luck with this. Personally, I have learned to love inexpensive knives. I jjust got a $30 package from Smokey Mountain with a SAK, an Opinel, and 2 ceramic pocket sharpeners. I am as happy as a pig in mud. :D

The way I calculate it, it would take you less than three months to repay the loan at $370/mth. If you only spend $1,000 on your knives & accessories & put $1,000 back, just in case, after you make 3 payments of $370, or $1,110, you could pull the, just in case $1,000, that you don't need anymore, and 0 out your loan. Or you could pay for the 6 months and still have $1,000 in the bank when you are done. Not the best way to go from a value standpoint, but only you know your personal finances, and what your threshhold for debt is. Good luck!

this is funny thread.

The title says it all! -just make it a statement instead of a question.

I am happy and stupid.

merry xmas.

If you were my son we'd be having a serious talk about how to use credit and utilizing a little more self dicipline and awareness about frivolous spending for wants vs needs. Since you are not my son I'll spare you and I'll just say I hope that nothing happens between now and the pay off time of that loan that would cause you to really need that money or that credit for something important.

Have you added up what you really will end up paying for those knives now, even if you pay it off early? No need to answer. Just pointing it out really. You probably will have more than full retail in them afterwards though. But at least you are happy right?

When I first read this thread, I thought to myself, this is one of the stupidest financial decisions a young person could make. But after thinking about this, this could turn out to be a very valuable decision.

I first thought this was stupid for the following reason. You will receive the knives and really love them for a day, week, month, you pick the time frame. Then the honeymoon will be over and you will see that you are now paying alot of money each month and you will be sick to your stomach over what a foolish choice you made. I'm convinced this will happen, but what will ultimately determine how bad of a decision this is, is how you handle that feeling.

If this decision makes you realize that this is no way to handle your finances and you never do this again, then it might not be such a bad lesson. If you continue to make decisions like this the rest of your life, you are going to die broke and stupid.

By the way, the people suggesting that he should buy customs instead should be ashamed of themselves.

My username says it all..."Fool4Blades." :D

Glad I am not the ONLY one! The Bank Loan is no big deal, people have taken out loans for much less important things I am sure, but have you thought about selling some Bone Marrow?? Now THAT is an idea!

No big interest rates to pay back, and you help somebody else in the process! ;)

Never. I've taken loans before- primarily tuition and medical bills- but never for something that wasn't an absolute NEED.

Next year, when I go to medical school, I'm going to take the monster loan. After maxing the federal loans out, I have to go bank to the tune of 150K. What will that be used for? Tuition, place to live, living expenses. About two grand is going into my car to do all the maintenance that will come due in the next few years and head it off early. Easier to pay $1200 now to replace a worn timing chain than $5000 in three years when it breaks and wrecks the motor.

If it were something I needed, two grand is no problem. For a knife for the collection, I'll wait and save.

I think it's insane. I buy knives with "extra" money and after other stuff is taken care of.

I think what's wrong with society today is that they want everything now and have no patience. I have waited 4+ months at times to go buy a knife that I want because I either don't have the spare money or I know the money should be spent elsewhere.

I would have just worked extra or done some side jobs for that $1000 and then bought what I wanted.

Nobody seems to want to work for things anymore either.

That's about as bad as buying something because you don't have to pay on it until January 2007. You will still have to pay for it....but only after it's half worn out.

If you knew me, you wouldn't say I don't have patience. I have had to wait and save up and wait and save up for everything my whole life. All I have done is wait.

Now I have a good job and I work very, very hard. I can afford to not wait. I can afford to make myself happy for once and buy what I want. I would rather pay X a month and spend that time with a Sebenza, Skirmish, Manix, and SERE2K rather than waiting. No, I cannot afford all of the knives right now, but I can afford the loan. It is extremely safe financially.

This small loan is no big deal. I would rather have the knives now rather than later. The extra I pay due to interest is worth it, to me.

I do not enjoy the waiting, or the saving up. I enjoy using the knives. The thrill for me is not the chase, nor the catch. It is the meal.

I still appreciate the input, but I think many of you are strongly misjudging me and my wants, and making a bigger deal out of this loan than it really is.

If I enjoyed saving up for knives, I would. But I don't. I hate it. I enjoy using knives. I'd rather pay 500 for a Sebenza and have it now than 400 for it and have it in a month. I can afford to do that, and it is worth it to me. This loan is the same decision, on a larger scale.

If I was really a spoiled brat that can never wait and is poor with his money, then I wouldn't have what I have, and I wouldn't have spend so long saving up for what I do have. My family has been piss poor for much of my childhood. We lived in a neighborhood with driveby shootings and gang fights in my front yard. After high school I started giving guitar lessons for money, but I didn't have a lot of students. I got to live at home and not pay rent, but I had to pay for my food, car, gas etc... I lived on Top Ramen and bought *ZERO* fun items. Not a DVD, CD, knife, videogame etc... I was still very fortunate and didn't work a lot of hours, but I know what its like to go years without buying anything other than food, drinks, and gas. My car payment was always paid, and I always had gas. I took care of what I needed first. And after that, I had nothing left, so I bought nothing fun.

After getting sick of that and getting rid of my "I am a musician and will never get a real job!" mindset, I went out to get a real job and a real income. I am now making more than I thought I would and can afford to pay the monthly payment for a loan. I would rather do that than wait any longer to get the things I want. I have never missed a payment, and never had to put aside one of my needs because I foolishly got something I wanted. This loan will not interfere with my needs.

That doesn't mean my decision is right, but I do think that many of you have called me things, or implied things about me, that are laughably untrue.

I know this wont be a popular reply , but I say if you feel comfortable with doing that go ahead an do it . People get loans to do alot of diff things and alot of those things may seem goofy to other people .

I happen to agree. We each have our own paths, and this seems too be yours. You are comfy with it, and happy, I say great!

You must be mental! First of all this whole 'build a credit rating' racket is just a con. Big business loves a sucker who is willing to pay interest. Remember interest is your hard earned money going down the toilet. It buys you nothing, nada! Debt is sometimes, regretably necessary, e.g. a mortage, education and perhaps a car to get to work. Over and above that, is just money pissed away because baby wants it NOW! By all means indulge in luxuries but earn and save the money first. I also love good watches and have a Rolex and many other fine timepieces. For Xmas I've just dropped nearly $5000 on a Tag Heuer Monaco, the Steve McQueen model. The thing is , I've wanted this watch for 10 years and the wait has added no end to the pleasure of getting it now. Cash purchase of course. Like others have said, you really are going to do youself out of some serious anticipatory pleasure by getting everything you want in one go and, deep down, the fact you've posed the question proves you know it already.
On the other hand, life is for living, money is for spending, live large and merry Christmas playa!:)

Why should the people who made that suggestion be ashamed of themselves?

It sounds to me as if you have given some thought to this and are doing to make yourself happy and, last I heard, money doesn't travel with you when you die so may as well use it now. Since you are not using the money you would otherwise be using for " worthwhile " expenses then by all means do it, hell people take out loans for all sorts of gizmo's, toys and goodies all the time because they want it now ( newer tv? newer fridge? newer sofa? Pergo instead of linoleum for the kitchen? ATV? newer computer? ) a credit card might have better rates but a loan by any other name is still a loan. Enjoy your knives!

i agree with just gettin a credit card.

if this is your first experience with credit. watch out.

you'll be able to hang at first. but you will start slippin. especially if you're an instant gratification kind a guy.

i just started with credit 2 years ago. and i have only now just been able to tackle my debt down to a few hundred bucks. :o it got as bad as about how much your about to borrow, round 2.5 grand. having a girlfriend didnt help.

i cant wait for a morgage !!!:D :jerkit:

I've read this entire thread and have to say needs and wants are part of every life. We all have free will. The balance comes with how many we are responsible for. If Hair has worked hard to get to this point and is not taking away from others (wife, kids) hey, go for it. My investments are my free money, after all of the needs have been met (heat, mortage, ins, water etc.) My only wish at this point is that I had $350 plus a month to spend on my addiction.
