Hey Bladeforums peeps,I'm having rotator cuff surgery this coming Tuesday(6/18).

I have confidence in my doctor. He's my family doctor's brother-in-law.He worked on his knee.So if he's good enough to work on my doctor's knee,he's good enough to work on my shoulder...I guess.:o.
He(the Orthopedic) said he does one of these rotator cuff repairs weekly. That's good, can't say he's lacking in the experience dept.

I've NEVER had surgery in my life except for some minor oral surgery. So I'm pretty nervous.I'd appreciate it if ya'll would throw some good vibes my way.

Thanks

Good luck, John - I hope everything goes well and you are back to 100% very quickly.

best

What pain meds?

I had my left hip joint replaced last August. Into the hospital in the morning, down to the operating room a few hours later, spinal anesthesia -- all I felt was a light touch -- and the next thing I knew, I was awake and feeling fine immediately.

A few hours later, the anesthesia wore off. Next morning I was on my feet doing a little physical therapy. No pain.

I have had rotator cuff surgery on both shoulders and carpal tunnel surgery on both wrists plus two spinal cord surgeries. Being an industrial truck mechanic can be tough on a persons body. The surgeries were a walk in the park compared to the aches and pains before the cuttings

It sounds like you will be in good hands. Best of luck, and here is to hoping for a full and speedy recovery!

Good luck , John !

And yes we want pix of the hot nurses posted in W&C.;)

May the surgeon not have hay fever during the surgery and your first post after the surgery is 'What's the best knife for carving a peg leg?'.

Best of luck with your surgery, John.

I tore my quadriceps tendon, on my left knee, about a year and a half ago and was out for seven months from work. Like you, I'd never had any major surgery other than oral surgery and was nervous about it. Fortunately, other than some major pain and discomfort at first, everything went well.

Good luck John.... several bits of advice, learned the hard way: take some foam ear plugs. Hospitals are noisy, they will help you sleep. If you are anywhere near 5"10" or taller, ask for the "bed extension", you will thank me later. BE NICE TO YOUR NURSES... even the mean ones. And lastly, and perhaps MOST importantly... IF they will need to catheterize your bladder... make sure they do that when you are anesthetized. Awake catheterization of the bladder should be a recognized torture for enemy combatants.

Hey man, I had my shoulder completely reconstructed a while back, they took out all the cartilage, which was useless it was so arthritic and torn up, fixed my labrum, fixed my rotator cuff, drilled holes in my humorous, and fixed one of the tendons and I can tell you it isn't that bad. You just go into the room count to ten and you wake up tired in another room. Rotator cuffs tend respond very well to surgery.

How old are you, how did you injure it, and is there a sport or anything that you are trying to get back to?

P.S. you will likely not need to stay in the hospital overnight

I'm 44.
I tore it doing benchpresses with dumbells.I know,I know I feel like a dumbell.:o He said it wasn't a bad tear, but it is full thickness & can only be repaired surgically. It won't heal on it's own.

Mongo,I'm 5'8" so I should be good.Believe it or not the catheter is one of my biggest fears about having surgery.I heard it hurts for days when you pee.My wife said they probably won't catheter me cause I'm fasting for 12 hours before.Under their instruction. No food OR Water.
I'll be in & out the same day too.

Thanks for all the well wishes & sharing your personal experiences.
I really don't want to know too much.If I google the surgery & watch the video,I would most likely chicken out.I can't watch surgical procedures(no matter how minor),or even my own blood going up the tube when I'm giving it.It makes me nauseous.:barf:

It was the strangest feeling. It didn't hurt at first. It felt like an electrical pulse then a 'snap!' like a cable snapping. Then immediate weakness.I even tried to finish my workout! That didn't go too well for me.That's when the pain started.
I'll be glad when it's all healed up.I'll probably never push myself when I'm exercising after this.Lesson learned.

Best of luck, take a deep breath and you'll be fine. It's really amazing what they can do in a operating room these days with very consistent results.

Good luck, I used to have a terrible fear of blood and surgery as well. But after my collegiate athletic career left me with numerous injuries that required a total of 7 surgeries, the fear dissipated. It really isn't NEARLY as bad as it seems. Rotator cuff surgeries aren't too complicated and have high success rates. And it isn't nearly as bad as a surgery involving your core or a weight bearing portion of the body.

You'll be fine, just following the restrictions and PT protocol and you will be back in the gym benching 450 lbs in no time!
