I'm having trouble deciding on some Traditional knife for the office...

I think if I saw the new guy in the office at work, peeling an apple I'd think he was some sort of fussy psychopath!

Sorry but unless you bake pies at work there is no need to be peeling apples, it would just be creepy.

I'm getting this mental picture of a guy staring off into space while slowly and methodically peeling the skin off and apple, with great satisfaction at the long curls he makes.

Which gives me the picture of him doing something similar to a person, or perhaps a small mammal.

Sorry for being judgmental, but it's about to get worse...well, maybe not worse, but more

The opniel and sodbuster both seem to look like prison shanks to most non-knife people, I would heavily avoid those.

Even a full sized trapper comes off as a "big ole hunting knife"

My suggestion would be either a vic classic, the tiny one with scissors, a nail file, and a small blade, perhaps as a keychain, or maybe a regular sized swiss army knife, with the normal red handles everyone is used to. You can refer to it as your MacGyver tool and say it was a graduation present that you got along with some advice on being prepared.

I peel an apple with my pocket knife blade just about every day at work. A Vic Classic will do this reasonably well.

Jeez. Ha I like to always try to find something I can agree with in any post, and I agree the sak classic is very capable. But that's it.

I say go with what you like, if you are comfortable they will be. If your reading into every one of your actions, they will too. I've found 2-3/4" to 3-1/2" is a nice size that doesn't look like you are pulling a Crocodile Dundee "now that's a Knife..." Be yourself and for right now remember "Less is more" be more observant, you'll see who is who, who can be trusted and who runs their mouth, ect. Then as time allows slowly open up, to the degree that you've found they can handle it. But what knife you carry, whatever you feel like carrying. I do think the orange one is awfully classy though. Best of luck.

Most people don't seem real "knife friendly" to me, you can more or less "get away with it" without to many problems in public, but at work its rather odd.

I'll peel apples at home, mostly as an excuse to use a nice pocket knife, and to make the snack last longer.

But I think maybe I've seen someone peel an apple in public twice in my life, both old guys who likely had poorly fitted dentures.

When I started my current job a couple years ago, I only carried my small SAK with red handles and the BSA logo until I figured out the acceptance (or not) of pocket knives.

While it isn't a very knife friendly place, everyone now knows I've been a Scout leader and have had more than one person ask me for a knife when opening boxes, clam packs and other packaging that needs cutting. They get the small SAK while I keep a Peanut or other small (~3") knife in my other pocket.

Good luck on the new job!

My vote goes for the Alox Executive or the Pioneer Rancher with its main blade for food prep and small "hawkbill" for opening envelopes.
another thought would be the Aitor Castor -- similar utilitarian design and size as the Opinel, but slightly nicer looking and the handles are not as bulky.

I'd choose the SAK with the most tools on it. The more tools on the SAK, makes it looks like a tool, with the knife being an afterthought.

Oh this? Yeah. It's got scissors, a can opener, tweezers, a toothpick, and some of these things double as cute little screwdrivers! Kinda handy.

I peel them at work almost daily in the break room which is used by about 175 people, most of whom I do not know. No one ever gives me a second glance when I am using my pocket knife to peel my apple at work.

How well do your dentures fit? ;)

I sliced up two apples at my desk today with my Vic Cadet. I don't think anyone paid any attention.

+1 on the trapper. I think any handsom looking slipjoint would be safe enough. My mom doesn't even freak out at the sight of a full size trapper (if it's "pretty") and she's a skiddish one.

Thanks everyone for your advice and contributions. I think enough has been said here so I'm closing this one down.

edit: well, I would if I knew how to :). If a moderator sees this, could you please close this one? Thank you.
