I'm here to brag about my "barn find" 1989 Buck 124

The joy of finding a rare Buck is a feeling we all love! Especially at a fair or bargain price. I admire that you tried to be fair with the previous owner as I have been in that same situation with the same result. The polished blade seems a little unusual to me but I'm not a 124 expert. Even though fairly pristine if you are not going to actually use it you might want to consider sending it back to Buck for a Spa service to bring it back as new as possible. Shipping costs back and forth between Europe and the US might make that impractical if Buck even would ship there.

Welcome to the Buck Knives section here on BF.
Congratulations on a beautiful 124.
In Europe €50 is ridiculously low in price.
Thank you. Yes it is. I have been looking for a new or newish 124 for actual use on my mountain adventures and they are around 300 euros when they are in stock. Of course, this one is too pretty to use so I will keep looking for a newer one. At least that's my excuse!

Why not just put that one to use? Who are you saving it for? Can't hurt it... :)

I found an old 928 palm skinner, new in box, with sheath and COA for $100. Yep, $100!! Carried it hunting several times and even skinned a deer or 2 with it. Wife thought I'd lost my mind.

I explained to here that it's a tool. Would the maker be more proud that it was being used, or that it was hidden away in a box in the closet?

They're tools, use 'em.

My wife KathyJo famously said the same thing to me when I was holding my 2007 Elk Nickel silver 111 Club knife in my hand. I took her advice and made it my desk Buck for years and carried it at various gigs (I play harp) and actually enjoyed using it. I seen a NIB on the bay several years ago for more than double the price I paid but years of use and enjoyment are worth something too. The BCCI gold etch on the blade is actually fairly tough.

Give me time, give me time.... Three days in and I'm still thinking about building a small shrine for it.... hopefully I will overcome the honeymoon period 😂

I posted this short video on YouTube to see if anyone has clues as to the origin or the customization. There are very few Buck 124 vids on YouTube so it should show up in searches and get a few comments after awhile.

Yes, it's true. My first post and I'm already bragging haha. I just bought this Buck 124 in absolute perfect condition. I don't imagine it has ever been really used or sharpened. The sheath is very good too, showing tiny bits of wear from probably shifting around in a box inside the barn for 33 years. What surprises me is the absolute mirror finish of the blade. It's a 1989 so I believe it's 425M steel. It has the "V" symbol next to 124. The scales are very dark brown with a very tight grain. I don't recall ever seeing a Buck sheath like this for a 124. It's a taco style with a dangler. The snap has Buck on it so I suspect it's original. I'm American and live in France. I found it on a local buy/sell website for a silly price. The elderly gentleman said he's had it for 30+ years. I'm a happy camper.

Very nice catch :^D

I learned something new from this discussion!

I am embarrassed to say that I was previously unaware that the Buck 124 was a full tang knife. I never owned or handled one and I just assumed with was like the 119, etc.
