I'm I the only one who only collects folders?

Look at my collection the other day and noticed that I only have a few knives that aren't folders. The ones I do have are mainly for a specific purpose like a filet knife, hunting, etc. Other than that it's just folders for me. I've see pictures that some of you have post and a lot of you have a good mix. So it got me to wondering if I was the only one?

i only really collect folders as well.
for me it has a lot to do with practicality.
i collect knives that i plan to use/carry,
and i can't really do that with fixeds here.

i mainly collect them too. don't feel alone. actually most of my collection (non-users) are slipjoint folders (such as case and queen). however my EDC'ers are tactical folders and SAKs

i think i have 2-3 fixed in my knife case, the other fixed are for users (camping and what not).

Same for me - my collection is primarily in folders. I was doing a bit of kit knives, some of my own stuff (stock removal/tool steels), and do have a few production fixed blades, but folders fit the bill for most things I do.

I don't have the exact statistics, but I'd guess that 60% - 70% of my knives are folders. Mostly I don't "Collect", but rather Accumulate knives of interest so I have all sorts of bladed objects. I do have two Mini-Collections within my Accumulation, Schrade Old Timers (mostly folders) and vintage Bruckmann pocketknives (all are folders).

With the current fad of EDCing "tactical" folders, I'd be suprised if the majority of regular forum readers didn't have more folders than fixed blades. There are also more than a few SAK collectors and collectors of vintage pocketknives.

The simple answer is.... yes. It is a rare sickness and very shameful. You may, in fact, be the only afflicted one to actually ...ASK.

tut tut tut.

We are all very sorry.

nope not alone , my small collection of little over 20 are all folders for edc,
looking to accumulate around 10 more soo i can rotate daily for edc.

I can count the number of fixed on both hands- Ka-Bar short and standard, BRKT Rogue, Marble's Fieldcraft, Cam 66 and Greco Dangler. The other hundred or so are all folders. :)

Personally, I can't get into the whole fixed blade thing. I own some nice fillet knives and hunting knives that are fixed blades, but they probably amount to 10 of the 300+ knives in my collection. To me they are working knives only. They're aweful tough to slip in a pocket to show somebody at work the "cool, new toy" you got. I think it takes alot more technical skill to produce a great folder as opposed to a great fixed blade, but that's just my opinion. Certainly there are some masterful fixed blade makers like Jerry Fisk and Bob Loveless, but those knives just don't appeal to me. Hey, different strokes for different folks. All that really matters is that YOU like what YOU collect!

I discovered after buying a couple of high-grade folders that I am strictly a fixed-blade collector. To me a folder is just a tool, and a Swamp Rat Rat Trap
and a Spyderco Native fullfill all my folder needs. I have only a couple of high grade collector folders and plan to dispose of them. I have no desire for a
large EDC rotation.

On the other hand, I am perfectly happy with a closet full of fixed blades, mostly Busses, and most of which I will never use.

To each his own, I suppose.

Of the 15 or so knives I have, I do not have one fixed blade. In the NYC area they frown upon walking the streets with fixed blades so I stay away from them.

This website has some great info about folders so my collection has grown a lot in the last month or so, unfortunatly my bank account has gone in the opposite direction.

My collection now includes two sebenzas a large and a small and three striders, a Pt,SnG, and an Ar to name just a couple. hopefully i will not read about any other really good knives or my next outlay of funds will be for the divorce.

my collection is mostly folders... mostly edc kind of knives.. I got a few shrades that I am holding onto.. might be worth some money some day
I hope
Good knife hunting

I don't have a good count on my collection but I have around 20 fixed blade knives. Some are older Gerbers and Case knives and quite a few are newer customs, mostly hunters. I have one Master Smith knife by Mike Williams and I'm looking to add more. I'd say I'm about 80% folders, 20% fixed. Way too many knives but I never sell any of them. I do give a few to my sons on special occasions.

I have 72 knives and only 6 or 7 of them are fixed blades. I have spent 385 bucks on a folder (guess which one), but will not bring myself to spending more than 100 on a fixed blade.

I do carry fixed blades in public and to work sometimes, but I have to really be in the mood for it. Folders are just more practical for me since I don't do any hunting or anything, so all of my time carrying a knife is in public. When I am in the mood to carry a fixed blade, I say "damn the sheeple if they want to stare", but I am in the mood to not draw attention far more often.

Hence, fixed blades draw less of my money and make up a small portion of my collection. However, I do own that 6 or 7 of them for the sake of variety.

I started out collecting fixed blades, got 'hooked' on the Buck 110, then more fixed blades, then more folders... must have something like 30% fixed blades / 70% folders. Plan on collecting more of each. :D

Curiosity got the better of me, so I did a quick statistical analysis comparing the number of fixed blade knives to folders. My earlier guestimate was accurate. 29% (n=65) of the knives are fixed blades; 71% (n=162) are folders.

The number of fixed blades is boosted by a dozen or more military bayonets and a strong aesthetic interest in traditional hunting knives. The folder count is boosted by a collection of Bruckman slipjoints and Old Timers.

If comparing only custom knives, it would be 100% fixed blades and 0% folders. So far I've found that only fixed blades fall within my economic comfort zone.

So the real question should be, "does anyone collect only fixed blades?"

Best Wishes,
Bob
