I'm I the only one who only collects folders?

I only have a couple of fixed blades. BK-7 camp knife, Rapala fillet knife and a Buck hunting knife.

There might be a couple others, but they are ones that I won. All I ever buy anymore are folders.

Wait, I take that back, I bought a Lil' Caper neck knife from AG Russell not long ago.

The vast majority of what I have are folders though.

This is an interesting topic. Like the majority of collectors/users here I favor folders. Even though I carry a fixed blade at work (family farm/stable) I tend not to use it as much as my folders, especialy in winter. Too many layers on to get the knife in and out of the sheath easily. Simply easier the pull the folder from my pocket. Less scary for the moms and daughters there for riding lessons as well.

I started out collecting mainly fixed blades but soon switched over to folders. Like Hair, I just can't bring myself to spend much on a fixed blade. Got the opposite problem when it comes folding knives, especaily "tactical" ones. Just something about a nice sharp, smooth operating folder, custom or production, that makes me all warm and tingly. :D

Oh no, you are NOT alone!! My collection IS folders. I think I own 3 fixed blades.

Curiosity got the better of me, so I did a quick statistical analysis comparing the number of fixed blade knives to folders. My earlier guestimate was accurate. 29% (n=65) of the knives are fixed blades; 71% (n=162) are folders.

The number of fixed blades is boosted by a dozen or more military bayonets and a strong aesthetic interest in traditional hunting knives. The folder count is boosted by a collection of Bruckman slipjoints and Old Timers.

If comparing only custom knives, it would be 100% fixed blades and 0% folders. So far I've found that only fixed blades fall within my economic comfort zone.

So the real question should be, "does anyone collect only fixed blades?"

Best Wishes,
Bob
my numbers follow yours very closely

Being that I'm new to "accumulating"( not a collection yet) knives as opposed to getting rid of one to get another, I've been looking for knives that are likely to be part of my EDC rotation. With that in mind, I just haven't got around to fixed blades yet. One of the other reasons is also that I've yet to really have a need(if there is such a thing) for a fixed blade for any of my activities. If you count a Gerber River Shorty on my PFD, my total # of fixed blades is 1;) .

I will always prefer a nice, finely made, detailed, gentleman's folder over any other kind of knife. Can't wait til I can afford to buy some more nice folders like a William and henry or such.
