im interested in cheap folders these days...

I carried a Benchmade AFCK 800 everyday for 20 years and decided to retire the old friend after two blade shorting tip snaps. I have tried a number of knives (probably 20 in the $15.00 - $200.00) looking for a suitable replacement and the winner for me was a Byrd Cara Cara 2.

I think for me it was the similar blade profile, spydie like hole, light weight, tip down and pocket clip style that did it for me. Love the Cara Cara. (note - I did remove the China stamp that made me cringe every time I opened the thing) (out of sight, out of mind)

Opinels have pretty cured me of longing for expensive knives. Easily modified. Great slicers. Incredibly tough. People friendly. Easy to carry.

The #9 Inox (middle) is my favorite for EDC. The #10 is my backpacking/woods knife.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you put on the wood of your handles?

I actually like the krinshaw termite. It's a knock off of kershaw thermite for $12.

I usually don't carry the really cheap stuff, but the ones I have had and enjoyed are the Dozier, Opinel, and Douk Douks.

Roosterscrow,

Thanks for mentioning the Cara Cara 2. I looked it up and actually prefer the looks of that to the Endura (the choil area looks a lot better IMO). I may have to get me one.

Don't you mean the bottom one? The middle one isn't an Inox.

I'm a traditional folder kinda guy and I must say that I haven't used any "cheap" knives that proved to be any better than The Rough Riders. Put another name on them and allota people wouldn't even know the difference!

For under ten bucks each and with all the hell I've put a few of them through they are vastly under priced in my opinion.
Try one!
Good luck in your search buddy!

Most of my knives are between $50.00 - $200.00 There are some really good users in that range.

I like the Kershaw Cryo. Good design, holds an edge, not very expensive, frame lock, titanium coated, different finishes, etc.. Here is a good video about it if you are not familiar with it.

It is no where near the quality of my edc Spyderco Gayle Bradley with it's M4 blade steel, but still not a bad deal for around $30.. I have given many as gifts to folks who are interested in better knives but not sure they need a $100 pocket knife.

Rough Rider, Colt, Marbles, Taylor-Schrade, and the Buck 37x and 38x traditional knives are hard to beat.
I have around 15 Rough Riders of different patterns. ALL came shaving sharp out if the box, great fit and finish , zero blade wobble, and hold an edge.
I EDC a Buck 301 and 371 stockman, and 389 canoe. My current lockback on EDC duty is a Taylor-Schrade Old Timer 7OT. (also have a Uncle Henry LB7 fingerprint magnet, and a couple Buck 110's, for a change of pace)
I've never had a problem with any of my made in China knives.

Do you already have a good swiss army knife?

Ignoring the Victorinox Classic on my keychain, I carry a SAK in my left front pocket as a people friendly backup for when the modern folder in my right front pocket (either a Rat II or a Spyderco Cat) might draw unwanted attention. My favorite models (so far) are the Victorinox Small Tinker and the Wenger Traveler.

I agree with the Cryo as well. I just got the G10 version and I like it a lot. A little on the smaller side but it feels very sturdy. It's a little lighter than the other models since it's not 100% steel. The only knock is the country of origin, but that's speculative I guess. Good little EDC anyway...

You spendthrift! Just kidding, the G10 version is a great model. If the Cryo seems a little small, there is the big brother the Cryo 2 or II. Here are a couple of good videos about it.

From my personal experience the Kershaw Tremor, Crown II and Black Horse II were excellent and ridiculously cheap. ($12, $4 and $14 at a bricks and mortar on cloesout)

Opinels NEED to be tried at least once if you haven't... They are fantastic knives for modding.

One knife that I don't believe has been mentioned is a Higonokami; they are a blast to use and take a superfine edge.

Not my pic.

No doubt on that one. Better yet, I got it from Amazon during a one day sale so I got it for $27 shipped. I'll take that little beater all day for that. I tell ya what though, I'm definitely surprised. It's great for work and teams up well with a traditional....
