Glad to hear you got a class and an iaito. Hope a few bokkens as well. They will go a long way for teaching muscle memory. You will notice some difference in handling when you finally use a live blade, but hopefully not much.
As for prices of an actual cutter, it's going to be a few hundred dollars. I'd probably go with one from Bugei or perhaps Last Legend, but see your sensi for any specific recommendations. It could be a year or two at least before you ar practising with a live blade anyway, maybe months for tameshigiri.
