I'm looking for a good utility EDC

I'm looking for a nice EDC folder, as prior to this all I've had are what I think are fairly cheap blades I've picked up on a whim at some hardware or sporting goods store quite a while back. This will get used as a light-med duty knife. A pocket clip would be nice since I don't usually wear a belt I could put a sheath on. Lower price is better, but I'm willing to pay what is necessary for a good quality knife. One handed opening would be nice too (not auto or balisong though, although I'd carry a bali if I could, its quite illegal to carry one here).

Let me know if I left anything out, and thanks for any help you guys can provide.

I'd highly recommend the Benchmade Griptilian series, there's bound to be one to suit your needs without breaking your budget. I prefer the Mini-Griptilian 556, which is has a plain edge.

A Benchmade 556 Mini-Griptilian would be an excellent choice, as would the larger 551 Griptilian.

It depends what your price range is. My normal EDC is the Spyderco Native supplemented with the Delica. Can highly recommend both. If you are looking for value for money have a look at the Kabar Dozier designed folders in AUS8 - they are better than the CRKT products of similar price in my view and would meet all your requirements.

Get your self a plain edge Spyderco Delica or Endura and a 204 Sharpmaker.

Actually there are a lot of good Spyderco Choices for under $50, pick one and a shapmaker and your good to go.

Spyderco serrated Delica. If you get a chance, you can stop by my store tomorrow when I'm working (3-9) and you can feel out some of the options mentioned... Even if you decide to buy them cheaper online.

My favorite EDC is the FRN Delica plain edge .

It carries nice at only 1.9 oz and stays sharp for a good while. VG-10 blade steel!!!!

There are two things it doesn't do well and it's because of the blade shape....fruit peeling like you would with a pairing knife and wood carving/whittling. But for everything else, it rocks!

An EDC is a personal choice so I recommend holding as many as you find and there should be lots good choices near the $50 mark.

Good luck,
Collecter

I'd be quite tempted to do that sometime, but you're about 5 hours south of me. What are your reasons for preferring serrated to plain? I've always been more of a plain person myself.

Thank you everybody, I'm liking what I'm seeing so far, the one question I have is should I pay extra attention to if it says it has an ambidextrous clip or not? As a lefty I'm not sure how much this would matter.

THAT sounds like good advice. Get a feel first. What looks good and what feels right are not always the same. A generous offer also.

Having the clip on the correct side is very important.

I use the clip for a better hold when I'm opening the knife with one hand.

Check out Victorinox Soldier. My experience, u might not like it for the first time, to me it's definitely not a "love at first sight" kind of kinfe, but, try brining it along with u for a week, very possibly u will like it as much as I do. And that awl... once I figured out what it is for, I found that it is somewhat the crucial feature I like about this knife. Try it, if u haven't got one yet! :)

Oh, THAT bay... I should have figured. My bad.
I like the serrated delica simply because it gets the job done better. If you prefer plain edge, that's cool. I have simply found that most of my plain edge jobs can be accomplished with the blade tip (box opening, letters, etc) then the rest of it is all business.
Great steel on these guys, too.

Well I live in California like you, the two knives that I personally carry everyday are my Camillus Heat and my Cold Steel Vaquero Grande. The V. Grande at 6" in blade length is to big for practical utility work but the Camillus Heat is just right. It does have a spring assist but its still California legal. Blade length on the Heat is 3.65 made of AUS-8, comes in satin or black finish, serrated or plain. I recommend the plain edge. And you can pick one up on Ebay for $40 like I did. The clip can be attached for left or right hand carry. I'm a southpaw and can open and close this knife easily with either hand.

A while back I was asking the people at KnifeForms.com which blade I should get, and tons of people recommended that knife for it's value. I listened and got it, and I was pretty happy about my purchase. Then less then a month after I got it, I lost it at a park. It fell out of my back pocket. I loved that knife so much, I bought it again, this time in the black finish (which I like better).

The Benchmade 556 is definitely a great knife too, just about all Benchmade knives are. Same goes for Spyderco. I never been a fan of the Spyderco's looks (just doesn't fit me) but their great quality.

You should visit a website like KnivesPlus.com, search around to see their selection of knives then post all the knives you like and that fit your tastes. It's much easier to help a person narrow down his selection then to pick a knife out of thin air.

Hrmm, right now the 2 that are looking most appealing right now are the camillus heat and the spyderco native. The questions that I have are that I've heard that aus-8 is not particularly great steel as steel goes, so I'm wondering how big a factor that should be in my decision, and it looks like one has a clip set up for tip up carry (native), and one has it for tip down (heat), and I'm wondering what you guys think works best. I may try to find a store somewhere around here that has both of these to go and try a couple out if I have some spare time sometime soon.

Anybody have anything to say against either of these 2 knives? (I'm still quite open to new ideas too)

If you're looking for something small, then i'd also recommend the Spyderco Calypso Jr. I prefer it over the mini griptilian because it is a lot more comfortable to carry. Also has better blade steel in my opinion. The flat ground VG-10 is great.

If you want something bigger then i'd go for a spyderco military or benchmade 806D2 AFCK. Both are awesome. I prefer the military, but the afck has the awesome axis lock and a lot of people prefer that.

I am currently enamored with my Kershaw Ken Onion Blur.

It has a movable clip for up/down, left/right carry, nice thumbstuds, assisted opening, sturdy blade, and unbelivably non-slip scales.

Check it out! Avail. in serrated or not (I prefer not).

Rgds,

Jeremy
