Im looking for a heavy knife that is small in length.

I always look at my k55k or opinel when I need to do some heavy cutting.
The cold steel tri-ad locking knives are really though and can take more abuse than most abuse if thats what you're thinking.

The spyderco techno is really stout as is the Boker Albatross. Both blades measure in around 5mm blades, ti frame locks, very nice!

Mineral Mountain Hatchet Works chute knife.

Heavy friggin duty. Comes with a crap sheath. Have one made later. Sharpened pry bar. Haven't figured out yet if that is a complement or not. But yea, that's what it is. Beat on it. Hammer on it. Break stuff. Do stupid shit. I have no idea what the warrenty is, if any. You won't need it. Thanks.

For a tough hard use knife I'm assuming you're talking fixed blades. CPM 3V and INFI are examples of really tough steels. Survive! GSO 3.5 (CPM 3V) and Busse Anniversary Mean Street CG (INFI) both have a 3.5" blade.

The shortest HEAVY DUTY knife i have is this:

Boker Plus BOB Elegance
Jesper Voxnaes
AUS-8 steel
7mm thick or .275591" inches.
7 3/4" long. LOOKS short but because i can get my front finger so close to the blade, i have handle left over.
Kydex sheath & Tec-Loc

TOPS knives Lil' Roughneck:

3/8" thick stock, plus the coating:

Overall length is 6 1/4", the blade is 2 3/4. I assume the 4" length the OP mentioned was the blade.

Steel is 5160, a grade which is known for toughness. You'll have to ignore TOPS "marketing" (101% MADE IN AMERICA!!!!!). They get the heat treat right, and their handles are comfortable.

To the best of my knowledge, this is the only production knife using 3/8" stock. It may be overkill, but if you want something heavier than this, you'll probably have to get a custom. With lead handles.

Ontario Ranger Falcon 3 7/8th inch, .250 thick of 5160 spring steel. USA made and around $70. Can't beat value IMO.

I agree with a few others. The Spyderco Techno, is top of my list. Its truly a little big knife. It even fits in your watch pocket....

I am wondering if anyone would have any recommendations on a knife that is preferably at or under four inches but is good for heavier jobs.

3 posts so you are new here
Welcome

Questions like this are so open ended that they are not really answerable

"heavier jobs' ??
What do you mean?
What will you be using the knife for?
How much do you want to spend?
Fixed or folder?

Then you can get answers suited to you

For a heavy folder, try a Buck 110. If you're looking for something to carry into the field for dressing out game, the weight of the knife does most of the work for you...and the fact that you can get one pretty much anywhere for under $45 with a sheath sure doesn't hurt. Of course if you want to carry it in your pocket, you'd better be wearing a belt.

For a stout smaller fixed blade, I'd seriously suggest a TOPS Overlander. That is one serious knife considering the over all size of it...and the sheath that comes with it can be pretty much hooked on to anything in any direction without the need to have military training;)

TOPS Delta Unit 3. 1/4" thick 1095, 3 inch blade and 7 1/4 overall. Awesome little knife. Full flat grind so it slices and cuts really well.

Like someone else said: MMHW (if you mean sub 4 inch blade)

FFOK #1
Over-all length- 8 "
Blade length- 3.75"
Approx. width- 2"
Steel thickness- 1/4"
1095 steel

Since the OP didn't mention if it was a fixed or folder, or the price range, the only logical answer I can come up with is....jello pudding.
