I'm looking for a quality machete, preferably bolo

I'll also suggest you support Baryonyx. Great to deal with, and the convex edge they put on the "special grade" machetes is awesome.

Thank you everybody for all the help! I guess this really is a great forum! I've decided to get this one as it is most exactly what I'm looking for in addition to being pre-sharpened, inspected, and most importantly cheaper!

Good call man. Condors are great buys, and Baryonyx is a great company to do business with(I'll be placing an order with them myself tomorrow, if what I want is in stock)...and their special grade service is amazing.

Since he will put a mind blowing convex, do yourself a favor and pick up some medium grit sandpaper and learn to maintain that convex edge. Its easy as pie to sharpen it in the field with good technique and you will blast through wood and other tough medium.

Haha--thanks for the kind words, everyone! I just do what I love!

they come that way by design. the are supposed to be finished, aka sharpened by yourself.

i can't prove this, but my grandad told me in the old days machetes, axes, shovels, etc came mostly dull or unfinished on the sharpening.......on purpose and you were supposed to sharpen them up to the angles you needed. this still hasn't changed so much on the shovels, axes, machetes, etc in the box stores.....but what has changed is home sharpening has about died off except for those of us on these boards. hence the frustration folks have with dull tools.

all that said even companies who sharpen cutlery prior to sending them, i'm not really impressed often......7 times out of 10 i have to finish them myself....good thing i can sharpen.

lastly yep, imacasa, and tram...most bang for the buck, imho, if ya don't mind finishing them off. or you can buy the condors, and just touch up the edge as needed or buy them from baryonyxknife....great dealer with good tools for folks who like to use them.

It's true! The thing is, back in the day Americans used to demand high quality first and foremost, but at a price they could afford. If the buyer could do the work themselves, they'd prefer to trade time for money and do the finishing in order to get a great tool at an affordable price. And edges are very personal to a lot of folks in terms of how they like them applied, so it allows the personal application of the edge they like.

Heck--no need to worry about involved methods of keeping the convex "perfect"--I just touch mine up with a DMT Diafold in the field. The advantage of a convexed edge is that it's thinner at the shoulder than a V edge of equal edge angle so that doesn't really change with simple routine sharpening. :)

I agree with the COndors from Fortytwoblades!! Great knives and service.

Both Big Chris and Bill Seigle make Boloish blades that I would love to try.

For something more traditional- http://filipinobolos.com/bolos.html I have not ordered from them yet but fully intend to. I have a few Philippine Barongs and Bolos- mine are not full tang but I really love them. Filipinobolos does offer a full tang bolo to satisfy those of us who like to push limits :)

I got one of the special grade Tramontina machetes from them and I agree, the convex is great and ready to go right out of the box. He does some other stuff too, to make sure they are ready to use. I have large hands (XL glove size) and I did have to do a fair bit of tuning on the scales to get it to fit my hand better, but it's an awesome tool now.

condor tool & knife is making several great machetes. if you are looking for a lighter machete i want to recomend the condor El Salvador machete. if you are looking for a heavy chopping machete i want to recomend the condor classic line, they have several great products like the: engineer bolo, pack golok and village parang
