I fancy knives and feel somewhat interested in trying my hand at making one, or many. Do you have any recommendation on a good read to get started?

I think i'd like to start by buying through tang blade stock, not heating and hammering my own.

Thanks a bunch for any direction or suggestions you can offer up.

Regards,
Robert

The newbe section has tons of info and the link Munky88 posted looks good too. I am working on my first knives and every thing I have done so far has been learned in that section along with questions here. Just do it. I bought some steel from Texas knifemakers supply online, hacksaw, files, and drillbits. From there I learned new things and it is turning into a snowball effect. I love it. Good luck and hope you enjoy making knives.
Welcome to Blade Forums by the way, this site will just make your sick desires for knives worse. You have been warned.

Welcome to the Bladeforums.
The newbie stickies st the top are full of old threads that will help a lot. The basics of making knives is covered in many books (there is a list in the stickies). Regardless of which way you decide to start (stock removal or forging), all blades are finished and handled the same way.

Good luck, and stick around. This is a great place.

BTW, for searching this forum, use this engine. It works superbly:

Robert,

Welcome to the forums, you will find a lot of very good help here.

I put a link in, but it was already added above. ;)

Have a good day!

There are tons of great makers in TX, maybe you can find a couple in your area to visit. Nothing will teach you better than talking to someone who knows how to do it, especially if they'll let you watch them work or take you under their wing for a knife or two.
