Hi people, My name is Adam and in new to this forum. Im 16 years old, live in Canada, and i just got my new Benchmade 42 Bali-song! (and because i got that i thought i might as well go for broke and get a SOG flash I for kicks) But there is one problem: im not quite sure how to take care of my new jewel. I think im pretty much settled on using the Tuf-cloth and Tuf-glide for protection and lubricant, but i have no idea what to do about a sharpener!!! Can any of you recommend a good sharpener or any other essential accessory that i require????

Anyway thats my main problem right now, but if any of you who care to hear a story about why i chose to get a butterfly as and introduction, here's why:

It all started one day when me and 2 other friends were walking down a street in our neighborhood in broad daylight. We were all 15 at the time. The mood suddenly changed though, when two eighteen year old men from out of town crossed the street and began walking towards us. They were evidently the "bad type" from their dress and mannerisms. Anyways, they were both substantially bigger than us, and while one of them walked behind us the other stopped right in front of us. He casually approached us and asked "Watchya got??". We were taken by such surprise that none of us said anything. He repeated himself, this time sounding a little more aggressive. We still said nothing. He then noticed the earphones dangling from our shirt collars. He said " Hey guys, how boutchya hand over those pods?". One of my friends reluctantly handed his over, they guy then asked me and my other friend. My friend said hes not giving nobody his ipod. Thats when things got worse. The man pulled out a switchblade and pushed him into the other thug standing behind us, and very aggressively demanded the ipod while threating him with the knife. We both pleaded with him, but to no avail. All three of us ended up getting jacked that day, and it didnt feel good.

Our town is a pretty nice town for the most part, but there are those people who always cause trouble that sometimes escalates into voilence. I decided I needed a way to defend myself in case of a dire emergency. I searched and searched and eventually decided on a knife. I was uncertain what kind of knife to get until i saw the butterfly knife. At that point it was not as much a matter of self-defense, but a matter of a new fun hobbie! I read up on the types of Balisongs and from much research concluded that i might as well skip the cheap chinese ones and go straight for the best. And thats how I ended up getting my new BM 42.

So theres a little backround infor for ya, and any advice regarding sharpeners for my baby would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

PS I understand the dangers and risk involved, but i don't plan on carrying my bali for Self defence!
I've concluded that it's just too risky for EDC and also even if i wanted to I'm not skilled enough.

Well congrats and sorry about the new hobby. Hope you enjoy your stay. The bali song is probably not the best SD knife due to the amount of motion it takes to open.

After actually reading your story, I would shy away from telling you to use a knife for SD with guys like that. They will probably feel more threatened than you and do something decidedly stupid. If it were me I would try to take advantage of the likely weak Switch Blade and try to snap the blade from the handle with a Bowie. That's just me.

Try to keep yourself out of trouble, a knife should be carried as a tool not a weapon.

Better yet---avoid a knife fight at all costs----and be more aware of your surroundings. Buy a pistol when you are old enough.

Aren't Balis illegal in Canada?

They are. And so are handguns (and switchblades, for that matter).

My sympathiles for the robbery, but I strongly suggest you hide that balisong away from sheeple and definetly do not carry it where an officer can spot it.

.... We were having a grand time, stealing those little cereal sample boxes from peoples mailboxes and devouring them without care. ......

I don't know about Canada, but in the US that is a federal offense!

Maybe a kid who steals someones mail isn't really mature enough to carry a knife.

Balis are illigal in can as well as switchs. YOU DO NOT WANT TO CARRY AN ILLEGAL BLADE FOR SD. Even if you defend yourself you will go to jail for longer than the person you defended yourself againt. The best defence is just to run. Losing you ipods that day is much much better than losing your life or freedom. Be careful bro.

Listen to these guys, carrying an illegal knife for self-defense is definitely a big no-no :thumbdn:

Keep the bali at home, and pick up something that won't get you in trouble with police in the first place, a good folder should get you by for EDC uses.

Without training, pepper spray would be better for SD anyway.

Sorry to hear about your troubles though, and have fun with the new knives.

In Canada, a Bali is a prohibited weapon and you will face charges if you are caught with one. Your best defence is to be aware of your surroundings and avoid a confrontation. A martial arts course will help to build confidence and if you want to carry a knife as a tool, then look into an assisted opening knife such as a Kershaw Blur or Leek, which are legal in Canada.

Yea as i said before the purpose of my bali is not as much self-defence as it is a fun hobby. But for work and for casual EDC i picked up the AO Flash I as well.

+1.

BTW, I reported this thread, seems like it would be better suited to some other forum.

What! What do you mean "reported it"? This is my first time on this forum and so far it hasn't been a very welcoming experience...
I thought I would come here to try and learn something but so far all im getting is a bunch of flak. If i wanted that then i would go to my mom.

Take cover adam! Take cover, immediately!

Also, adam, I think what Dave is saying is that this thread, depending on the way it develops (it could go anywhere at this point) might do better placed in the Balisong forum or the Practical Tactical forum.

I don't think any offense was intended.

Just to answer the original question of maintaining your BM-42, I would recommend a Spyderco Sharpmaker or something equivalent. The blade on the Balisong is 154CM hardened to 58-60 HRC. The ceramic rods will be able to maintain an already sharp knife, but it you let it get dull, you might want to go with a DMT diamond stone to bring it back.

One other point, when you practice learning to open a Balisong, be sure to tape up the edge with a very think tape, such as the cotton cloth tape you can find in the first aid sections of a pharmacy. It should be thick enough so that if you get your fingers in the way of the swinging blade that you don't slash tendons. Ruin your day that.

I've had a few of the Benchmade 'songs. Living here in Oregon where they are made (where they are legal) it just seemed the thing to do.

adam...two pieces of advice:

1) If you decide to change or alter a statement made in a previous post..do it in a new post...don't edit the old one..that gets pretty confusing

2) You can't go wrong with a Spyderco Sharpmaker. If I can make knves hair-popping sharp with it...anybody can.

That's an excellent point, jpatrick. First aid cotton tape might be handy in any "sharpened bali flipping practice" scenario!

Haha ok thanks, i will heed the advice.
But the sharpmaker might be a little over my budget. Is there another decent system for a bit less?

Almost any of the ceramic 'crock stick' sharpeners will do, but the 154CM steel in the Balisong won't go dull quickly under normal use. You'd likely have time to just use the blade while you save up for the Sharpmaker. You can usually find one available for less than the MSRP, either mail order or in a sporting goods store (not one of the mall based knife shops with high overhead costs). I got one for about $55 US at Sportsman's Warehouse.
