I'm officially done with pocket clips...

I had the same car scratching problem as the original poster.

Now I have removed the clips and carry them deep in my pocket. Takes less space.

never had that problem either, Does the hook on the end of the clip stick out more than it should, causing it to catch things?

Belt buckles are my number one car scratcher and not clips. I often use my pickup as a field office and will be using the flat surface of my tool box as a writing surface. This means you're often pretty snuggled up against the vehicle and the belt buckle has more than once scratched the paint. Clips on a front pocket may encounter the car or pickup as well in the circumstance.

I have the perfect height where my pocket clip can grab on the door jam. It would drive me nuts. I do carry the occasional clip knife when I need one for its one handed ability but generally just stick to traditional knives. I put mine in a little pocket sheath and have done so for the last 4 years or so. I cant say I really miss the clips all the much :)

So I got my Blur back yesterday and tested it with the same shorts that I had the original issue with. My estimate is that it takes about twice as much force to remove the Blur versus the Manix. At this point I'm willing to settle on the conclusion that this was a perfect storm scenario.

As a side note, I definitely won't be carrying the Blur without a pocket clip because it has the Glassbreaker tip on it which would slice open the pocket lining very easily.

I have considered to carry knife 'loose' in pocket, but I am actually worrying to loose it that way. Today I do not carry knife at work (I spend most of my day in front of computer or in some meetings) as it would look strange to have pocket clip showing. At the same time I do not dear to put a small knife (like Spyderco Air) in my pocket as the pockets on my suit pants (I do not wear the jacket to make use of more practical pockets) are shallow and the chance of a knife to slip out is high (I had smaller stuff falling out already).

I will soon have new set of pants tailored (I am apparently too slim for most 'production' suits and so I have to go 'custom' ;) ) and actually consider to have a little narrow vertical inner pocket added to RFP where a small knife could be clipped without being seen from outside (this must sound pretty nutty to non-knife people I guess :) )

I'm in the same boat for work. I carry a Spyderco Dice loose in my RFP but if there is a coin pocket on the inside I will clip it or at least put it in there. Haven't had any issues with stuff falling out since I try to stay right side up during work lol.

Almost any clip is going to have the issue of being worked up until it dislodges by sitting down at certain angles, or butting up against other objects. More worrisome to me is the tendency of some knives to open up when extricated from a tight pocket where they're clipped.

The clip on CRK Mnandi is one I would be ready to trust. It was made for suit pockets :)

The urban trapper incident is human error and not the pocket clip...

As far as losing knives, I have carried a folder with a pocket clip everyday for a very long time.
From cheaper productions, to really expensive customs, and everything in between.

Not only have I never lost a knife, but I have never had one fall out of my pocket.

Maybe I am just really lucky....

Knock on wood JR!

I have yet to lose a clipped knife either.

Been using some form of horizontal belt sheath for years (decades) for all the reasons mentioned here. I won't buy a knife that can't
be easily de-clipped.

I usually don't give a rip about my car's paint. I give it its own unique striping pattern when I go hunting and a lot of thorns give it a weathered look.

I do however freaked out that I damage the pocket clip on a nice knife instead [emoji1]

I took the clip off my Endura and just drop it into my RBP. Light enough and thin enough... Don't notice it. My Tenacious with its clip also rides there as do others of similar size in their turns as EDC come up. I'm not a fan of clips.

Reading the thread title, I was like heh yeah right... I never had the common problems with pocket clips and I am extremely active at work and at play.... I never get them bent, never lose knives because of the clip, etc etc

...But OP pointed out one thing that does happen to me... occasionally my clip dings my car door and paint when going in or out of the car. I go in and out probably a 100 different ways given the situation :p Just be watchful for that folks, it can really ruin your day, and your car doors.

Yes some knives, the very thin profile ones CAN work clipless for me. Examples are Delica and BM707...Really though, I prefer these knives clipped in pocket and the clip itself add to the ergos of the knife that I actually like.

Never had a problem with Big Sebenzas; Kershaw Leek & Blur, any type with a good pocket clip. Blur holds the tightest. And always have a folder in pocket, both at work, and "off duty."

I carry in back right pocket, tight to the outside seam. Nothing else in that pocket. Think the act of sitting may tend to force blades up, and possibly out, of front pocket. Except for that "Baby Swiss" that is waaay deep in right front. Good luck...;-)

My only problem with pocket clips is that, for me, my RFP knife sometimes catches on the seat belt when I undo it. The knife will either::
A. stay clipped to the seat belt,
B. fall off down that little crack between the seat and the middle console
or
C. stay in the pocket and the clip bends.

I dislike the bent clip scenario the most.

Just get yourself any of the excellent Cold Steel models and use the included pocket clip. You will always know if your knife is missing cause it will have taken your pants with it!

Now that's funny right there - I don't care who you are.:D

It also has some truth to it!

I too can relate to OP, as I lost a pocket clip knife about 3 weeks ago ( & thankfully found it) that somehow came out of my pocket.

I believe a significant factor with my lost knife however, was that I was wearing board /swim shorts that have thin, smooth fabric, which made it much easier for the knife to slip out. My bad.

Lesson learned on my part, and moving forward I will use the same cliped carry method I use, with swim shorts that have no pockets. In this case, I clip the knife into the front of my shorts, at about 1 o'clock / appendix carry.

I find that the pressure between my stomach, and the shorts fabric, adds significant tension to the knife, and I personally find it to be very, very secure for a pocket clip knife. I have carried this way swimming and boogie boarding in 4-6ft waves, and have never lost a knife. Accessibility is practically as good as in the pocket. This method of carry can be used with any pants, and if also worn with a belt, it would now add another angle of tension and pressure on the clip, from the opposite direction, making it even more secure.................not to mention that it is much less likely to scratch up your car (and with a belt, the clip is covered)........

May be worth trying, before giving up on pocket clips...............
