Well, guys, I've decided to bit the bullet and recondition that tortured BAS that Bill sent me. I want to accummulate all the info I need before I start the project though so I can work at a decent pace.
Here are my plans, and I am open to any and all suggestions, helpful comments, etc. My first plan of action is to remove the handle. The buttcap is quite loose already. How do I accomplish removing the handle? I saw Yvsa's thread on boiling the handle off, which seems fine, but what about the buttcap and the rest?
After that, I will have to heat treat the blade again. I was thinking while the steel is already hot, why not just pound it a bit with a hammer to get the kinks and bends out of the blade? Is this feasible or more than what someone can do with a basement recreational shop?
As far as the heat tretment goes, I was thinking about possibly doing a clay temper like what is found on Japanese swords. Is this a good idea, a bad one, can it be done without a forge? I need as much input as possible, so please don't hold back!

Fun time!!!

You can start by filing the tang off smooth where it coms thru the butt cap.The little diamond shaped piece should pop off then.

Next step is to boil it off.Keep the handle completely covered with water and pull off what pieces you can at a time. The Himalayan epoxy is like hot tar when melted so be careful.
The rest of the other thread tells what to do from there.

I think I would chicken out on trying to heat treat the blade with water because it is the only one you have.
I would use the oil and quench the edge without any clay.My little chakma came out with a nice temper line just using the water and quenching the edge.

I don't know if you have enough heat source to keep it as hot as it needs to be to do any straightening on it.
Red hot would be the time to do it though.Bear in mind that you will lose the brass inlay in the blade whe you get it that hot.

The other Kuhk Kooks may have some more suggestions.:-)

Chiro, how are you going to heat the blade? As Yvsa said, if you can get it red hot you can do some pounding to true it up.

If you don't want to boil the blade which takes some time you can speed up the process using a propane or acetylene torch. You are going to reharden the blade so getting it hot doesn't matter. Get the buttcap off like Yvsa said -- file the mushroom off the tang. Heat the buttcap (lightly, lightly so you don't burn the handle) and pull it off. It's hot. Use glooves or a rag. Then heat the blade just above the bolster but not so hot you damage the handle. The Himalayan epoxy will start bubbling and boiling and just yank the handle off.

Take it from there with whatever you have to work with and good luck. Keep us posted on your progress and if you need help along the way email me or call me. Yvsa, Dan. K and some others are better at this than I am but I might be able to help some.

Again, good luck!

I used the method of heating the butt cap like Uncle described on the latest one and it worked very well.

If you want to put a solid butt cap on it I will gladly send you a piece of material.
My cuz has some Aluminium Bronze that's just a fuzz over 1/4" thick he says.I think this will be better than brass.I do know it is very tough to machine.I should have it in a couple of days.
