First for the whiny part. I have been sick off and on for a long while now. I went in for an emergency CT Scan late last night. The Dr.s have been chasing Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn's Disease along with any other ailment that makes you digestively sick and lose a lot of blood. Right now I am having another bout with my diverticulitis and I am in for 2 scopes next week. More to the point, I am missing a lot of work. Side work was going to pay for Christmas, and I have drained my knife savings for bills and such (no Stomper Kephart, Horton Camp Blood and Busse BATAC for me. I guess I was a bad boy this year;)).

Alright, sorry for the long winded sob fest. Now, what I really would like some help with. I want to make some cool stuff for my family for Christmas. I have a lot of paracord, waxed cotton cord and some hardwood chunks I can utilize. So, would you guys put on your thinking caps and kick down some ingenious ideas for me to try for fun gifts?

Thanks, Mike

Sorry to hear of the problems bro, if you do have Colitis your diet can make a big difference, my buddy has had it for years and manages it just fine now he knows what to eat and what not to !

First, sorry to hear that you're sick, Mike. Sounds rough. I hope that things take a turn for the better soon. Good vibes coming your way from north of the border.

On to your question about projects. How are you set up for tools? I have been planning to make some nice custom fire pistons for my family this year, and it sounds like you have most of the ingredients for such a project. If you can precision drill the hardwood and add a functioning piston, you could throw on a braided paracord lanyard and you would be set - with some sanding and finishing, of course. Just a thought!

All the best,

- Mike

That's a great idea. I am a woodworker and have a pretty well tooled shop. Thanks, I really need a kickstart for the ol' noggin.

Thanks Pit. I am starting to learn about the diet. Then I hope to feel like taking some hikes like yours again.

Acrylic or wood pens, salt and pepper shakers, bowls, etc. There are a lot of prjects you can do with a lathe and a drill press. How about wooden knives/swords for the little one so they can play Cops and Robbers or be Pirates. I used a Busse AK-47 as a template for 3 wooden swords for my three boys. Those things get used as much as any of their toys from the store.

BTW, sorry to hear about the health issues. Poor health sucks in so many ways.

Very sorry to hear about the problems! Hope you come to better health in the very near future.

For gift ideas, you could always learn some new knots/braids and make bracelets or necklaces. You can also make watchbands or 'survival' necklaces. Could get small compasses to use on the necklace or wrist band.

Even a nicely carved/shaped piece of wood on the band would be neat, either as a lanyard, necklace, or key fob.

Mike,
Sorry to hear of your problems, I know its not easy to be productive when you're either visiting the doc or feel like crap. My wife's family requirement for Christmas is that the presents must be handmade. I am making a letter openr for my mother in law out of scrap titanium, I have one that was made from hardwood. Another idea I saw on tv was to make pendents from hardwoods or bone using a coping saw, a dremel and some sand paper. Hope that helps. Dan

I have had diverticulitis for many years. One thing to remember is to drink plenty of water after you eat. (So my doctor says). Stay away from corn and seeds.

You might pick up a Lee Valley wood working catalog. They have lots of kits for lamps, clocks, canes and walking sticks. I make walking sticks all the time as a hobby and something to look for in the woods. You might make up some sharpening kits from the small tin cans like the ones you see here now and then. Maybe siguy can post a picture of his.

It may cost a little but you can get Russel/Green river blades from (Track of the Wolf) and make handles for them. Another hobby of mine.:D

I do this stuff for the same reason, I don't get around well any more. To many hard knocks.:(

Good luck Bro.

You can make 2 or 3 inch king cobra braids with a key loop on one end. They make perfect key fobs, and they're 5ish feet or paracord if you unravel them.

Spoons are always popular

I made my buddy a king cobra braid shotgun sling. There's 100 or so feet of paracord put to good use :)

I can't seem to find the pattern for the Cobra Braid. I have seen finished items though, and they are typically very beautiful.

Very sorry to hear, Mike. It sounds very serious. Is this something that can be corrected or at least controlled? Sorry I'm so dumb about that.

I don;t guess there are many cowboys up in the NW, but guys wearing other types of boots might benefit from boot jacks. I've made up batches of them before for Christmas gifts. Jim's idea of scaling knife blanks is good too, I'll be doing that this year (though I never heard of his blanks - I use EnZo). Sheaths are good if you can get your hands on some of their knives and if you're into leather. Strops would be good - gluing 7-8oz leather to wood (or better 1/2" MDF) blocks. Also, you could make some firesteel holders out of nice wood or antler - those make great gifts (sorry if I missed someone else posting that idea)

I hope you can control this affliction.....

Thanks Stretch. Some more good ideas.
As far as my health, it should be treatable when we know exactly what all is wrong. Next up is ruling out the big C. Happy thoughts.:D
At least I'm starting to lose the weight I've needed to for awhile.

Get well soon

In my experience, handmade wooden objects (toys, small furniture, doll house furniture) are always welcome and the kind of things that get handed down..."Grandpa made this!"

:D

Sorry to hear about your health, I hope things turn around for you.

There are a lot of neat paracord items on stormdrane.blogspot.com - most of the items are embellishments on knives and the like, but some are stand alone items.

I recently made a nice dice cup out of oak using my lathe and forstner bits...great for drinking games for the older family members and great for board games for the kids.

What about a checkers board and pieces or even a set of dominos? I've still got my dominos and checkers from when I was a kid, they were pretty simply made but finished with care and even as a kid I could tell they were a bit special compared to the stuff you got from most toy shops.

I also got a box/chest made for me about the size of a shoe box. It was for all my 'special' stuff. Again simply made but finished well and the fact that I now had my own place for my stuff was great.

I'll try and think of smaller stuff and post back later.

Cant think of anything to make from wood but wanted to extend a get well wish.. Take care of your self.

I young man I with went through an ordeal with Crones, it is a seriou problem, he would have stoach cramps that would last for a couple days, during which time he couldn't eat or the cramps would get worse and last longer. they DRs. took out a foot or so of intestine just below his stomach and he has been doing good for a couple years, Now he just get a vitamin B shot every month because that part of the small intestine is where vitamin B is adsorbed he says.

I hope everything goes well and maybe you can use some cord to keep everything together. relax, don't worry, and enjoy the holidays.
