I'm sick of all the black coated blades

I'm sick of all the black coated blades. Are there that many buyers going on tactical missions to the mall with their black stealth blades? And I don't think you need that black coating to protect it from corrosion. There are so many uncoated blades that do not corrode or rust when treated with tuff cloth, militech, breakfree...etc.

BM says they coat D2 and M2 stuff because of corrosion, others sell D2 stuff without coating though with no probs, go figure.

i think a lot of folks just like the way it looks, dont know/worry about the scuffs/etc.

dont care for them myself anymore, used to though.

D2 doesn't need to be coated, because it's almost a stainless steel. M2, and A2 are a different story, they definitely need to be coated.

I don't really mind black coated blades as long as it fits the application. IMO, folders and such may be better off coated pending the steel type and intended application of the knife. Example for me is the Benchmade 806 in D2. I sometimes have one clipped IWB and rust may be an issue if the blade wasn't coated and had contact with sweat all day. Another example was a few weeks ago I was carrying a Sebenza in S30V clipped IWB during an intense 4hr workout session in which it was sweat on a bit. I neglected to oil\clean it and the next day it had some very light rust on the part of the blade that was in direct skin contact.
On fixed blades however, I tend to prefer a polished finish of one sort or another. Most of my fighters are in A2 and I've never really had any issues with rust on the blades. I use Rem-Oil and a light coating on the blade usually does the trick. One my EDC JSP fighter, which is carried IWB the only problem I had with rust was with the exposed pommel.
I guess overall I see a corrosion resistant coating as a maintenance thing rather than a "tactical" thing.

I, too, am bored with black-coated blades. I went through a phase in which all I really liked was black coated blades with black handle material. My feeling then was that I liked modern, non-ostentatious coloring on my knives. Nowadays, however, I generally prefer a mirror or hand-rubbed finish with some pleasantly-colored G-10 or micarta for the handle material.

I received in a trade a black bladed SOG Flash II CE. My regular SOG Flash II CE is an orphan now :D. The Spydie Native black blade looks pretty neat IMO. Must still be some of that mallninja left in the old system.

I don't really mind black coated blades all that much. Sure most people who are carrying them don't really need them in any way shape or form. But does that really matter? Honestly how many of us buy knives that we don't really need, but just buy them because we like them?

Another issue with any sort of coated blades is that after just a little use and sharpening it will really start showing more than on other types of finishes. Honestly to me, and many others, this isn't all that big if a deal, but it is one reason I prefer other finsihes.

M2, and A2 are a different story, they definitely need to be coated.

Bark River uses A2, uncoated. It works just fine and doesn't rust with minimal care.

It's just part of the 'tactical' knife package. Coated, eversized, high-tech materials (ie plastic), over-the-top advertising...

Some guys like 'tactical' knives to play ninja at the mall. Others like them for the quality, unique designs, aesthetics, ergonomics, interesting actions - really the same reasons that us hard-core accumulators buy hunters, slipjoints, bayonets, kukris, and anything else with a blade. Lucky for us, there are plenty of non-'tactical' knives available.

By the way, on my 'tactical' knives, I prefer a bead-blasted finish. Non-reflective for those top-secret undercover missions at the Mall, durable, and it looks nicer than a coating.

Best Wishes,
Bob

i own coated blades simply because the coated versions have better blade steel (see: BM806 and BM710)

but in general i perfer mirror finish, stonewashed, or satin.

I like satin finish. I only have one black coated blade:

If you don't like coated blades don't buy them. There's no reason to crap on people who do like them. I have several coated and non coated, for me it depends on the style of blade, sometimes the black finish just looks better to me on a particular knife than if it was uncoated.

My only gripe with coated blades is, the coatings ALL come off sooner or later. Doesn't really bother me, I just learn to live with it.

I really don't understand what the big deal is? Don't like it? Avoid it. Like it? Buy it.
I thought this topic was going well. Someone stated an opinion, others replied with pros and cons, and someone even posted an excellent photo.

No one's trying to make someone buy one, or prevent someone from buying one. We're discussing/griping/asking questions/critiqueing knives and knife features. If we didn't do that, the forums would be dead.
