I went in to my local knife shop today to finally get a razor edge put on the seal pup elite that my BK2 replaced as a BOB knife and learned a few interesting things. I was on the fence regarding buying a esee junglas and a BK9. Well when I went into the store low and behold they had a bk9 that I was able to handle. I know this sounds stupid but I never knew the kabars were thinner than the camillus version. I have a camulillus bk7. Anyway it was nice and it handled nicely. Something else I learned also was the importance of the local knife dealer as well as the importance of the online store as there in store price for the BK9 was 171.00! I'm giving an online dealer that sale, but for the experience I did buy the new SAK soldier for 54 dollars. Now what does that make me a rat packer or becker head? I own izula, RC3, RC4, camillus bk7, BK2 and soon to be bk9

The down side of brick and mortar stores is the overhead, but I still like having them around.

It makes you a knife person with good taste...

I second Mist, it makes you a knife owner of VERY good taste. B&M stores are great, but times are tough and knives can be expensive in shops and glass. The local need our business, but honestly, I can't afford to pay nearly twice the price for the stuff I need, not just knives.

Good call on the 9, you're gonna love it. I love mine.

Just one comment, tell the guy what the internet price is (honestly) and give them a chance to at least meet you in the middle if not match it.

I try like hell to support private owned stores, or even local franchises. Sometimes they are happy to make a reasonable counter offer.

Most places will know what the internet prices are and will want to at least make a sale rather than have you walk away. I've said pretty much that frequently to more than one store. If the guy gets nasty, f'em and it tells you something about him anyway.

"If you at least come close (to me with a single knife, even say within $20 on a knife at that price), I'll buy from you. Otherwise I walk out and you get no business at all."

If they have any wits about them at all, they'll deal. Worth a shot, always.

sweet chicken..

yeah, like king just said I would tell the store owner/manager what I get them for online, in the same breath let him know if he comes close to that we can make a sale.. of course he can't match it..

TES SE crew drink to much kewl-aid man, get a grip on yourself.. I'm glad to see you've come back down to reality (at least for the moment) and bought a Becker:D:thumbup:

I will go online price, shipping, +$10, if I can go over the stock and pick the grind I want. SMKW does that for me, and I get some wierd looks, but that is the benefit to a B&M. With that said, I do alot of online shopping, most of the knife shops around here are PROUD of the steel they carry and give you smartass remarks and hateful looks when you suggest online pricing.

Lol, can only imagine what it is like in person. Same here though in pricing. If B&M stores were 25% more than it wouldn't be so bad. Problem is there are 100% more some times, which is crazy. I think if B&M places had an online presence and good prices, they'd be fine. I could go to my local knife shop and handle knives and pay the same price somebody on the other side of the country pays from the same shop. Not sure if the volume would make up for the decreased price though.

Back to the OP. Congrats on the new knives. The bk9 is sweeeet.

You got to know your knife prices and values ( which you seem to do) or else you will get ripped off , Stateside as well as anywhere else. I've seen knives marked up $100 here !! I buy on-line 99% of the time and have saved hundreds . Only when I see a deal by chance in a B&M store will I buy it. I hardly ever intentionally go to a store to buy a knife anymore.
The BK 9 is an awesome knife , especially with the micarta. One of the best choppers going , as well as the Junglas is.

i've seen some people selling older knives, and even current knives, for vastly more than MSRP, let alone MSRP. madness.

enjoy your new purchase!

I just officially ordered my BK9 I found one that came with the small stainless knife too. Getting the B&M to drop their price to a reSonable amount was a no go, so I ordered online. Now it's just the waiting game, it would have to be the holidays. Where's the jeopardy music? I can't wait to get it.

Would they come down in price at all? Congrats on the new knife!

Yes they told me the best that they could do would be 140.00. I'm sorry I understand supporting locally but 140 for the BK9 alone from a B&M or 80 bucks for the BK9 with small knife included. I opted for the 80 bucks online. Of course if I wouldn't paid I would not have had to wait to play with it either.

Makes sense. $60 more for the knife is pretty high. I think if I could pay $100 locally, I would, though that is much lower than what even offered.

I too would prefer to support my local B&M's, but, the MSRP's are usually always alot higher. The retailers depend on 'impulse' buying according to one of my local dealers. They know how tactile a purchase can become, particularly a knife. Your mind is telling you to go buy that knife online and save a wad of cash, but, the emotional impulse to purchase can intensify once that piece is in your hand. Kinda like dealing with women!

I'm pretty fortunate to have a guy that deals reasonably. He's very much aware of the online competition, and keeps it close. I just ordered my ESKABAR for around $30, which makes me happy.

Just took my BK9 combo BK13 out of the mailbox just now. Initial response mixed. I do like the slimmer design vs my Camillus BK7 having a second knife is always nice. The weight is just about perfect. It is very agile in he hand and the stainless touch to the 13 is good seeing that it will be the one getting the acids from meat and fruits. My dislikes were I did nit know the 13 was that small. I somehow how it was on par with the esee izula. When it comes to the BK9 the handle scales did not fit flush and the metal protruded beyond the scales. For me only time will tell If this creates hot spots. The blade came sharp at least the BK9 did the13 needed extra sharpening. However for what I paid I am happy with my purchase. After testing i will a review. However thank you Ethan and Kabar for producing a product that is affordable and while not personally tested i am sure will meet the demands of camping, hunting as mine will be used and hopefully never needed but I'm sure will meet expectations in a survival situation.

Sweetness!!!! Congrats, looks awesome!!!

On the handles, you might try loosening the bolts just a little, and see if the handle will shift around to meet flush. All of mine do now, but I had to line them up perfect, and put the gorilla grip on the allen when I tightened them.

Make sure to tighten the bolts also, gorilla grip them baby down tight, it won't hurt them at all, just don't over do it and strip them out, like some people (not me) did (not me) when they (not me) got a little tipsy (not me) and really torqued down on the wrench (not me):D

I don't have any gorilla glue but I do have some locktite glue will that work or will that be to much for when I want to remove te scales.?

My BK2 came in today and I noticed that on your BK9, just like on my new BK2, the finish on the edge is very rough, but really sharp. As I resharpen this edge I am sure that the edge will smooth out. Is this typical of all Beckers produced by Kabar? My BK14 is set to arrive tomorrow and I will post pics of both as soon as possible. My question is about the edge. I am accustomed to using Emersons and a Strider or two and havent noticed this roughness of the edge in the past. You guys are much more familiar than I am with the Beckers, so I would appreciate any information. Thanks
