I'm sure you've heard of Larry Niven.

Yup, remember that, it's pretty old. Larry Niven was my favorite author when I was growing up. He did a few essays like that, a pretty good one on the more serious topic of the viability of teleportation.

Lucifer's Hammer!

Best "TEOTWAWKI" book ever!

"It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine...." Good song, I really liked it.

What's 'Lucifer's Hammer' about? Besides TEOTWAWKI?

Legacy of Heorot is indeed an awesome book. I read Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex when I was in fifth or sixth grade... enjoyed it immensely. :D

One of my favorite essays by one of my favorite authors. Ringworld is a classic, of course. All of the short fiction collected as "Tales of Known Space" are great as well.

For some time, I've been trying to get a copy of A World of Ptaavs. For some reason, this one isn't in print, and seems to have become a collector's item.

Niven is one of my favorite authors also.

"The Integral Trees" ranks up there as one of the strangest concepts for a novel I have ever read. I love all the known space stories.

I had no idea "A World of Ptaavs" is hard to find. *runs off to put his copy in a bag to keep it minty*

It was written in the 80's I think, it's about a big comet striking the earth and the survival and rebuilding afterwards. 1000% better than any of the recent rip-off books and movies!

It's one of only 5 or so sci-fi (although it's not really sci-fi,) books I have read 3 times.

Thanks TLC, I'll look it up. Now that I think about it. I believe my brother read this book and told me about it once, but I didn't follow up on it. This time I will.

Lucifer's Hammer was indeed a great book. I remember when I was reading that, I had bought it second-hand (used book stores are great) and when I got about 3/4 of the way through I found it was missing about 30 pages. Took me a week to find a replacement (I was a kid, didn't have many resources ;)).

Thanks, Maximus. Last time I checked, there were only a couple of hardcover copies available for 20-30 bucks. Couldn't even find one using our local library's excellent inter-library search function.

I will give you a slight heads up, be patient Lucifer's Hammer does not really get up and running until about 100 pages in, but it's worth the wait!

He's been my favourite author for as long as I can remember. For a while now I've been thinking of trying to collect all the known space books and stories. I think I might just put that a little higher on the priority list of things to do.
