Most of my knives don't get used. They sit in a case or roll, all the time.

These are the only ones that make it into the rotation(aside from the occasional slip-joint or SAK that's usually always there anyway).

Sebenza (large classic w/blackwood inlays & TK regrind)

Hinderer XM-18 (3.5" flipper w/3 scales)

Umnumzaan(customized by bigmark408)

BM635 mini-skirmish(blade altered by TK & handle slabs sanded by myself)

Kershaw RAM (w/G&G grip-clip & rescaled by Phillip Dobson)

Darrel Ralph Trigger Maze

Spyderco Sage II

Spyderco Stretch II (ZDP/CF)

Benchmade Gold Class M4/CF Griptilian

^These will NEVER be sold^(except for maybe the RAM & the Stretch)

Everything else(about 50 more) is just paperweights. They almost NEVER get used.

I have a Yuna being made,& I'm on the list for the new HEST folder, but that's about it.I'd like to get a G&G custom RAM,but don't think that'll ever happen, since they're pushing $1K.Even if I did save up enough for it,I could never carry & use a thousand dollar knife.
I'd like to get another custom DDR,but Darrel's current wait time is a little over a year.I honestly don't know where I'll be or what I'll be doing a year from now,so I'll pass on that.
Maybe in the future I'll get a small damascus Sebenza or Mnandi(or similar 'gent' knife),but that's about the extent of my folder interests for the near & far future.
The fixed blade situation is even worse.Unless I'm camping or hunting(extremely rare lately, the past few years, been so busy with work),I won't ever EDC a fixed blade, with the only exception being an IZULA.I've used some of my FB's in the kitchen, which was pretty cool.
I'd like to get a few Busses & other FB's from a few makers here, but I think I'm finally getting 'burnt out' on this whole knife collecting thing.
I'll probably be done within a year or so.:(

Anyone else in this boat?

I'm having same thoughts lately. I started selling some of my knives to cover bills and stuff, but once started I realized that I simply don't need that many.

I'm just trying to get started. But that's how I got with the whole gun collecting thing. Other then the fact that it's expensive as hell. You can only have so Meany "custom" 1911's before it gets boring.

RxEnergy,

Yea,Like once you get past 7 or 10 folders, one for everyday of the week & then some,it seems redundant to me.

Same with the fixed blades. You get your small 'bird & trout',Utility,Hunter,Camp knife,& Chopper.....maybe a Bowie or two. What else to get & why?

For me it seems like I am on an endless search for THE knife. Every time something new comes around I have to have it. So I buy/sell, buy/sell, it's an endless cycle.

For me it's hopeless I think.:o

I can relate where you're coming from.I have enough knives to last ten lifetimes.I'm almost 48 years old and sometimes wonder what's the point buying more knives than I can ever use. It's been an addiction of mine since childhood. But hey, that's why we're on this forum.

Knives come and knives go, only natural IMO. I've got a few keepers but I've sold quite a few lately. Don't want to hoard and I can't afford everything that's out there, so there's always bound to be some amount of rotation going on. I try to follow the idea of not having huge amounts of stuff, but rather less stuff, and nicer.

But it's not as if I'm always very succesful at resisting certain temptations. Hello Visa bill..long time no see. :)

ive done the same thing, I dont keep stuff that i dont use. I find it is easier to keep a smaller amount of knives i love, than it is to keep a larger amount of knives i like.

Interesting thread. Lately, my interests have moved over to slipjoints instead of
tactical. At times I think of selling off some of those to put money on the slippes.
The thing that stops me is I really don't have that large of collection to begin with
so it's not really a lot of cash tied up in comparison to what some of you guys have. :)

Yep! but some stuff is in a "special" class like my great great grandfather's barlow or my Dad's Case 6111 1/2 L or the one great grand dad pulled out of a guy's back - or my first boy scout knife.... these stay! but there's always opportunity to trade with the others!
Peace
Revvie!

I'm primarily a fixed-blade knife collector. The fact that I don't use my knives doesn't bother me at all. What has bothered me is the fact that I really didn't have an effective way to display my knives. So I ended up storing them in drawers. Then I saw a stand on Knives Live that appeared to be perfect for displaying fixed-blade knives. I ordered a few of them and set my knives up where I could see them. Doing that has rekindled my interest in collecting. Perhaps it could do the same thing for you.

Here's a link to the product:

PS: They're temporarily out of stock at the moment. :(

I do "step away" from knife collecting/accumulating occasionally. Other things take financial priority, nothing is appealing enough to buy, or I move onto other seasonal hobbies when the weather is nice.

But sell my knives in the 'down' times? No way. First off, most will never sell for as much as I paid, even if kept in new condition. Second, I actually still like every knife as much as when I bought it. Third, I'll probably be back to the hobby more when the weather turns for the worse.

bld522,You can make that so easily with a hand saw,a ruler,a pencil,& some sandpaper.

Well although I'm not on as large of a scale as you I'm thinking of selling off some of mine as well. BM Rift and Bradley Kimura to be exact.

I've never really considered myself a knife collector but I do have more than most folks do.

I can forsee in my lifetime there coming a time when what knives are available are much more limited than they are now and most of us have seen knives we might like going out of production. What I've taken to doing is knives that I really like I buy 2 of, use one put one up for just in case. It does cause me to have more on hand but at the same time I like having that just in case fall back. So far I've never had to break into the just in case stash.

I can't help but wonder how the bad economy is effecting how we look at knives now.

I recently sold off about a third of my collection that were sitting in boxes. Now all my production knives are users. Sure I have more than I need so none will be used a lot as I rotate through them. But they give me pleasure to look at and show to other people so why trim the collection any further?

Hinderer XM-18 (3.5" flipper w/3 scales)
I'll take it! ;)

Yeah I had a whole tupperware box of folders and another of fixed blades. None being used but a few.

I have it down to 4 good fixed blades, (not counting my 3 EDC Izulas) and 12 folders which are the cream of the crop "to me" with one on the way when it's finished.

I feel much better for having unloaded all of the knives that I did. It freed up my mind from feeling bad about loads of unused knives.

It freed up a lot of cash to score some knives I always wanted.

I can honestly say that I carry all of my folders now except for 2 new RAT-1's that I'm going to beat on because I believe you can if you know it's limitations and not go ballistic with it. (batonning, firemaking, basic survival stuff) :)
