I'm thinking of getting the 4Sevens Preon 2

I just got a red, (just so I could find it), Preon 2 a couple of weeks ago. I am a RSO at a shooting range so mine sits in a breast pocket in my vest or range bag 100% of the time. If I did carry it, I would give it a click, then just turn the head a quarter turn to activate whenever necessary. This is one very nice flashlight for light duty use.

I highly doubt that it will accidentally turn on in my pocket as I intend to carry it in the breast pocket of my jacket.

Not the Preon, but I just accidentally ran my 4Sevens Mini through the washer and dryer and it came out completely unscathed. As a matter of fact, it turned on the first time I twisted it while it was still hot from the dryer. :)

I immediately jumped online and ordered two more for friends who might do similarly dumb stuff. :D

That's pretty cool. I ordered mine earlier today.

I like the Preon 2, I really wish they'd redesign the switch though, its held in by clip tension and can pop out at times. I've had that happen twice once with my original switch and a second time with the replacement (the day after I got it). I just swapped the switch with a tailcap from a Preon 1. I did manage to fix one of the broken switches and put it on the Preon 1. There's a lot of competition in the flashlight world these days but 4sevens still has one the best 2xAAA penlight available in terms of output (probably the best looking penlight on the market right now as well).

Streamlight Stylus Pro is nowhere near as bright.
Not even close.
Not in the same category...at all.
I have the Streamlight, and recently got the Preon for my dad. Surprise suprise, but more lumens is brighter; alot brighter.

In my opinion the difference wasn't all that noticeable. and before you ask, no mine was not a counterfeit. positive.
certainly brighter. yes certainly. but in my mileage... not an earth shattering difference.
the biggest reason for that is that you just won't detect it in your day to day use. like I said you'll only notice a difference in the dark and at a distance.
I've compared the two side by side and I was disappointed.
and honestly, based on my comparisons I wouldn't be surprised if 4sevens fluffed the lumen output numbers just a little bit

I actually intend on carrying it in the way it was intended to be carried which is in the breast pocket so I think it turning on accidentally will be more unlikely. Thanks guys for all of your opinions.

even in the breast pocket it accidentally engaged often for me. like, often. you really need only to brush it and it'll turn on

Hello,

I have one and use it everyday at work. Its been dropped 2 time from 20 feet up and still works. Because it so small and light its a little easy to not notice it when you put it on your lap while sitting atop a 20 foot latter changing a light bulb. I have the black and titanium one, I also have a 4sevens Quark AA² tactical and the 4sevens Quark MiNi AA². The Preon2 is much easier to edc then both of them. I wouldnt take it backpacking because of the lower battery life on high but for everyday use its perfect. Im not sure why someone is complaining about it turning on when its in your pocket, if your use the clip it shouldn't really ever turn on by accident, its never happened to me.

Have a good one,

Chris

I tend to use my flashlights in the dark, often to see things at a distance.

I feel like you're trying to be sassy with me.
But I tend to use my flashlights in moderate light and dark but usually pretty close up though. and most people I know use flashlights in the same way. like if you need to illuminate the inside of something your working on. in these types of application the stylus pro is every bit as good
I guess just different strokes

You can feel that way, but you're wrong.
When I have to see behind an entire building I'm patrolling around, I use a flashlight.
When I'm in the woods and want to actually see where I'm going, I use a flashlight.
More light and a farther beam allows me to see more clearly and further...it's really that simple. More light = more sight.

Sure I will occasionally use flashlights at closer distances, and that's why having different light outputs on a light is nice. It also uses less battery power, which is nice.

Options are a good thing.

I have a couple of Preon 2's, and they are pretty good for what they are. In my view a Preon 2 should only be used/carried in circumstances where you can carry it in something like a shirt pocket or Maxpedition bag. That is, something vertical where the clicky button won't get actuated accidentally. That button is very prone to getting turned on accidentally. Beyond that there really is no downside except maybe cost. It uses AAA batteries that can be found or stolen anywhere (like tv remotes), and works well with Eneloop or other NiMH rechargeables. The variable light levels are nice, plus I like the strobe. But both of my Preon 2's are relegated to back-up roles, as their form factor just does not fit well into my EDC.

I'll add that for inside work, the Streamlight Stylus Pro is quite good. I carry one of those still, along with either the Surefire 6PX or the 4Sevens Quark Tactical, depending on my mood.
I quit carrying the 4 C-cell Maglite due to back issues; once your lower back starts to suck, the little bit that it throws your stride off gets magnified by the time you've done a couple hours of patrol.:(

Considering a Preon 2 for medical exams (high CRI). Any thoughts? Alternatives? I want high CRI without getting too crazy bright. Thanks,

Rob

I have a preon2 and like it. I did have a battery leak and get stuck in the tube requiring a hammer and a push pin to remove. Kinda irritating, but got the old batteries out, scrubbed down the inside, installed new batteries and works just the same. I'm sure the low would work for medical exams.
