I'm trying to decide on a first spyderco knife.

aargh!! i just realized that the caly 3 doesn't have screw construction, and i don't like that. I think i am leaning towards the sage I now.

I've carried and used Caly 3s since they came out... even sent one to AK with my best mate for an EDC folder that included a lot of outdoor activities. I've done the maintenance on all of them and I've never once found their pinned construction or lack of washers to be a problem. In fact, it's been just the opposite. Since they don't come apart, there's no worries about anything loosening up or something not being adjusted right. And not having washers just means that the tolerances in the pivot area are tight enough to keep most junk out so the area stays cleaner.

The one time I removed the pivot screw and took one of the blades out, there was nothing in the pivot area after a year of steady use but a little lube.

I like my Ti Military with an S90V blade. Too bad I had to buy two knives to put together this combination. I am thinking of doing the same thing with an Endura combining a ZDP 189 blade with a G-10 handle. The modularity of factory knives allows for many interesting combinations.
