Hi everyone. I've been reading this wonderful forum for a few weeks and wanted to share this picture:

This belonged to my great-grandfather. He worked for Sunshine Biscuits (which the shield says - promo knife, I assume). The blade simply reads: Imperial Providence RI.
I do have a few questions about this knife. What is the pattern called? Does anyone know what the scales are made from (celluloid, bakelite?)

Welcome to the forums Cheeseburger!

Im sure some more knowledable fokes will chime in but I believe that pattern is called a jack knife, and the handles do look alot like celluloid to me.

I'd call that a serpentine jack ,and that is a really cool one !!
Welcome Cheeseburger

Now that is what I call a first post!!!

Welcome to the forums, and I hardly need to tell you to treasure your
4th generation knife.

I bet a Cheez-It memorabilia collector would like that!!!!!
Nice Americana knife.............

Cool little knife that has been taken care of. Glad to have you join us here.

My dad had some of these made up with his business info on the scales in the early '60's.

The model was the same pattern as yours (like Vince said - a serp. jack.)
The scales on his model were plastic and the bolsters were hollow. I imagine your scales are plastic or celluloid, but the bolsters do not look like the hollow aluminum that mine has. Looks like they may be solid.

Thanks for the replies and info. I've been in possesion of this knife for at least 15 years. Since I have never and would never carry this for fear of it slipping out of a pocket, I've been toying with the thought of buying the same pattern to carry (Boker or Case, since Imperial is no longer). Thanks again.

man, I just love that pattern. Then again, I've always had a soft spot for jacks. Case makes a texas jack in amber bone and CV, that I really like, unfortunately the ends aren't rounded like that one.
btw: welcome! and thanks for posting that

Nice one, and an older one too! Looks like a nice imitation MOP.

Imperials like that one would be hard to find in the condition that one is in. Most of the Imperials that are out there are the stamped metal handle construction. The solid bolster ones are out there, but they tend to come through with "well used" blades.

But, they are out there. Everyone's favorite auction site (rhymes with Schmeebay) has a wide variety. You could also find a nice Schrade Old Timer or Uncle Henry in that pattern without much searching.

Thanks for sharing, and good luck in your search...

Glenn
