Sorry to hear this new my friend, I hope the changes work out for you.

It seems that business model is working for Andy.

When it comes to the Forum, traffic is typically down this time if year.

Any I totally agree about the W&SS, it's been neutered since they split that forum up,

...I too miss the old days in the W&SS.

Big Mike

Yes since they split it up just not the same.... old days were a lot of fun over there :( guess if it aint broke....

I can certainly understand the new policy. It's sad in a way but it makes sense. I suppose it takes a lot of work and time to hammer out a new design, and then to get radio silence when you're ready to build it must be infuriating. Even if all does go well it's got to be less profitable do one-ofs from scratch. It's probably better to focus on the best selling knives and just produce them.

Hmmm...I was kind of thinking your forum membership was paid up for a couple years? I hope you can continue running HK Handmade full time. Your knives are beautiful!

Yes - I am sure it was paid for two years -

Just checking- does that mean you still intend to take orders in August? You probably hear it all the time but I have been mulling getting something made...been thinking about it for the last few months. I have tons of JKs that belonged to my dad. As much as I treasure them I would like to get something of my own, too.

Now, I don't want to try to make more work for you, John. But if you do end up quitting the business of full time knife making I hope you'll at least consider keeping the forum active as an Owners/Fan Forum. I would certainly be willing to chip in towards paying to keep the forum alive. Obviously I hope you're able to keep making knives but I understand the realities of running a business. A fella has to eat.

FWIW it seems like Bladeforums and Knifeforums have both fallen off a lot lately. I'm not sure if it's the economy, politics, society, etc. Just seems like less activity as of late. Hopefully it turns around soon.

Here's how I wandered onto this forum:

Used to frequent the usn forum but got tired of the vibe there, so I came over to BF to do some trading for traditional knives. Unloaded a few of my modern folders, and picked up some GECs and the like. In one trade, the guy offered up a JK Kentucky Fieldmate. I had never heard of JK Handmade Knives, but I loved the knife and got it in trade. Began to hang out on the JK forum, and found friendly cool people here. Then Tats was selling some JK Knives to fund a Yellowstone trip, and I spotted the JK Hiker and was fortunate to be able to buy it. Now I have 2 JK Knives, but John did not get money for them, which I feel bad about. I am not a prolific knife buyer but I will make it a priority to buy directly from John in the future. Like I said, I'm a newbie here but I have enjoyed my time on this sub forum and love my JK Knives. I will do my part to support these great great knives and great great forum and people.

I feel flattered that 2 "Mikes" have posted here, have not seen you guys around in a long time!

I plan on taking orders through September, maybe if they continue to come in I will do it longer. As for the forum being up in January, I bought the first membership five years ago in January of 2009 for 3 years because Spark was doing a special. When that was up I believe you guys bought a 2 year one. That`s why I believe it`s up in January, that will be 5 years.

All this support is making me wonder about this decision. If orders actually do start coming in maybe I`ll reconsider it. Possibly do some orders, and some just to post.

If stopping taking orders has been the best thing other makers has done, I recommend that you give it a try... this is how you support your family and they come first. If, after awhile, income is up and you miss doing the custom knives, go ahead and do a few each month for s#!/ and giggles. We will understand no matter which direction you go. I hope it works out for you though, I hate my job and think it a shame a fellow would have to give up a job he loves to make ends meet.

Glad to hear my November Playmate is still in the works though ;)

Best of luck, I will be one looking out for the sales and great ideas.

Only one more week to place orders for October. Orders placed after that may not be made until November.
