I've been doing reviews of all the books and videos I've listed. Check my forums, The Library for the reviews. I've indicated the skills/items each author uses to some extent.

I hope that helps!

WILDWOODS WISDOM, by Elsworth Jaeger.

just a great all around book!

MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN, by Jean George
ISLAND OF THE BLUE DOLPHINS by Scott O'Dell

these two are "kids" books- great stuff.

Bradford Angier wrote many books on these subjects, but they seem to rely pretty heavily on other references

SAS ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SURVIVAL, by Barry Davies

this is new, I like it pretty good.

Add to that list:

- The Book of Knots.

- The Compass and Land Navigation Manual (military issue - don't know FM#)

- Hot To Survive in the Woods. Bradford Angier's classic.

- Red Cross First Aid Manual

- Primitive Skills. Don't know who wrote it, but I photocopied a bunch of stuff from a friend's copy and it is awesome.

- SAS Survival Handbook by John Wiseman(someone listed the Encyclopedia - is that similar to this book?)

- YMCA of NAUI Water Safety Manual

Almost forgot.

- Repair manual for your car. Keeps you from having to use the others to begin with (assuming you also have tools, water, oil, and credit card).

WOW, you folks are fast and prepared. Many are in my shelves and are fine selections. Don't forget The Complete Walker by Colin Fletcher for gear selection and usage, although not really a "survival manual".

Great books and videos have been mentioned above, however, I would like to add Tom Brown's books.

HM

The problem I have with Tom Brown books is that most of what he says is pretty much copied from earlier authors (a problem with many "survival" and wilderness books). Most of the unique material he presents is of a spiritual, non-varifiable nature. I have no personal use for his spirituality, so his books have nothing at all for me.

What about Ragnar Benson? He seems to have been seriously overlooked. I really learned a lot from SURVIVAL POACHING.

FUR, FISH, AND GAME magazine carries many books from the 1930's by the A.R. Harding publishing company. They cover trapping- including primitive traps, building shelters, making snowshoes, and many other skills a long line wilderness trapper would need.

NEVER SAY DIE, the old Canadian airforce survival manual, was republished by Paladin Press. It has lots of cold weather info.

Indeed, what about Ragnar Benson? I have learned a great deal from his books. "Living off of the Land in City and Country" is a classic as are his two "Modern Survival Retreat" books. He also published an interesting little book on switchblades.
High on my list is also the SAS Survival Guide (and its Urban counterpart) by Lofty Wiseman.

Where no law exists there still must be justice- Dan Mahoney

The Boy Scout Manual for crying out loud.

Edible Wild Plants-A North American Field Guide Thomas S. Elias & Peter A. Dykeman

This is a good one for the area you are in Marion-good pictures!

Field Guide to Edible Wild Plants Bradford Angier

Guide to Wild Foods and Useful Plants Christopher Nyerges

Also the Peterson field guide to edible plants is a helpful one. You can't have too many of these books as you can cross-reference each of them and find many edible plants in your area. The first two I always carried in my pack and I was able to identify many plants with these two. Good luck.

Since the world is mostly water I would add:

Canoeing - American Red Cross

River Rescue - Les Bechdel&Slim Ray

Waterlovers Guide to Marine Medicine - Dr. Paul g. Gill,Jr, MD

Also On Rope. I do not remember the authors.

Cheers,

ts
