Impressed with Byrd

Got myself a Spyderco Byrd a few days ago. I really liked the look of the pelican, so I got that model. I am damn impressed with this knife!!

First of all its a BIG chunk of metal. Its heavy and it feels built like a tank. When opend there is absolutely NO blade blade whatsoever. Vertical or horizontal. Hold ing and using this big knife is confidence inspiring. Yes its a cheapie, but it sure as hell doesn't handle like one.

Haven't had chance to really use it yet. I did cut up a lot of cardboard and styrofoame yesterday, and it did a great job. Still sharp, but doesn't shave too easily anymore.

The fit and finish are near perfect. The only part not finished too well is the opening hole. The inside is a little rough. Nothing that can't be easily fixed.

Not much of a review, but I haven't had it long enough. I'll post a better one soon. Anybody else impressed with the byrds as much as I am??

The Pelican also caught my eye. Could you post some pictures next to other knives or common objects for size comparison? Let me know how the edge holds up, if it's decent I'll probably order one when I get my sharpmaker.

Greetings everyone!

Byrds are great knives. I was also surprised by the fit and finish of my Pelican. Got it for something like $20.
I excited about G10 version that will be released in the near future.

Stay sharp!

Any info on the pricing of the G-10 model? Assuming the price isn't hiked up too much, I think that'd make an amazing budget folder from the feedback I've heard on the Byrd line and my own experience with Spyderco.

Vivi, the prices below are a direct cut and paste from the Spyderco forum at Spyderco.com. TazKristi, the spokesperson of Spyderco is the person who originally posted this.

BY03GP & BY03GPS* - byrd Cara Cara G-10 - MSRP $35.95 (ETA Aug/Sep)

BY04GP & BY04GPS* - byrd Meadowlark G-10 - MSRP $33.95 (ETA Aug/Sep)

I'll have to keep an eye out for those. Hope we can get some photos and such sometime fairly soon. I think I'll order a Pelican or another Byrd knife sometime in the next few months to see how they compare to my Delica.

Thanks for the info.

The only downside of my byrd experience was that I had to return the first one I picked up. It was the cara cara. I initially chose that one for the extra choil and the ridges on the thumb ramp. Once I got to handling it I noticed that there was significant horizontal blade play, open and closed. So bad that it rattled against the handles when it was closed. It was thier last cara cara, so I opted for next favourite, the pelican. The two knives are like night and day. The pelican feels like it should cost double.

I bought the Raven model of the Byrd knives, and they are bloody satisfying. I took them out for camping for about a week, did all sorts of things you do at camping, yet the electroplated black of the knife didn't even come off a single bit like my gerber Trendy's teflon coat did on the first day. They are cheap, but doesn't feel as one. Definitely a line of knives to own...

Oh by the way, sorry for not introducing myself properly! I'm only new here, so it'd be great to know everyone here and spread the love of knife :)

Bushibladejapan, greetings and welcome to Blade Forums. Spread the love of the knife! You have come to the right place.

I, too, am impressed by the Byrd model I have. The only problem is that it is a tank. Far too heavy for my taste, but everything about it is solid. The steel is 440C, I think. Not bad, but not premium. Overall it's a steal for the price and it's a very handsome knife.

The blade is well contoured and tough. In a day when many knife manufacturers are making blades from 440A and 420, it's probably a step up.

Sorry for the delay on the pictures. Here they are.

Here you can see the rough finishing in the opening hole.

It has a very strong blade profile

I HATE YOUR **** GUTS!!!

I hate it when that happens. :D (edited for lauguage)

I had the CaraCara. My son took one look at it and made off with it. Byrds are amazing bargains. I have 4 Byrds and can't wait for the new G10s.

I had the same complaint as Confederate about these knives being heavy. In a way it is good because these are solid knives with quality steels and craftsmanship that exceeds its street price. That is also why I can't wait for the G10 models. Another Spyderco with G10 will run around $80. These will be like $30 each.

I have a Byrd as well, but have encountered alot of blade play and trouble with the locking mechanism. It mostly sits in a drawer, but I have to say it was one of the sharpest Spyderco's OTB I've handled in a long time.
