Well I got home today and just like Les said it was laying by my side door in a fed ex box. I opened it up and what can I say it is as close to perfect in a handmade piece that I have seen. Very light and lovely lines and finish. Definately not a camp bowie a true fighter in every way. It is a plain model with iron wood grips and a very nicely made Paul Long sheath. I am more acustomed to a more gripy handle material and was curious to see how the blade would handle at speed so I could not resist and I grabbed some gift rap card board tubes the fat ones set them up and flash and a pop later I was very impressed with how the handle stayed in my hand. The thin handle made for easy blade indexing . I do not know what the handle shape is called but as you know it's like a birds head with out the defined birds head. well it seemed to help with blade retention. I yurn for stag thou and think that would really help it stay put in your hand. I know that card board tube cutting is no test for a blade but it gave me a feel of how the blade handled. I wiped the blade off admired the lovely lines and sheathed it and stuck it in my waist band I had to go for about an hour and a half ride round trip and the knife was very comfortable to carry even sitting in bucket seats. It's thin handle and nine inch blade rode very well. Since I am used to carrying heavy blades in this way this knife felt like a feather. All in all "wow" a true fighting bowie, carries well and fit and finish are impeciable and it's got a cool name. Thanks to you guy's for pointing this one out.

"Dean" and "as close to perfect in a handmade piece" tend to go together. ;)

Congrats on a fine piece.

jp....souns great...good for you for putting on your waist and using it....hope it sees some good use for you....i don't think enough custom knives get used.....ryan

Isn't it amazing how lightening fast it is.

It's funny whenever someone picks one up you can see the surprise in their face as to how light it is.

If ever in a dual, I would want the EL Diablo on my team!

Glad you like it JP.

The way I look at it is it's mine I worked for it. I have three daughters I told them if anything happens to me sell my guns, knives, and taxidermy and keep what they want. So if some one is going to enjoy it it might as well be me. I don't abuse knives and use them for screw drivers or pry bars but if I am going out and not working outside {i have knives for that} i will always carry a nice custom. Especialy if I am carrying for defensive purposes. I have knives in cases also and I love displaying them that way. But the more I like a knife the more I need to carry it.

Roger and Kevin thanks for all the input and it is amazing how it feels in the hand.. Like I said it is sure to be an old favorite soon. I have looked at your collections and I am in awe. There are some great people on this forum. I am not much of a forum guy but hardly any of the people I know are blade enthusiasts and it is nice to have an outlet thanks to all

a FEATHER PATTERN damascus and stag El Diablo would drag a constellation or two into alignment along with the planets:D

When I spoke with Harvey before Christmas, he said he was doing El Diablo in Feather or Texas Wind....both are dynamite!

If I got a Texas Wind, I would have no problem with it.:D

I would love a damascus and stag El Diablo. Maybe someday. all the kids and hunting trips are catching up. Was just in Tajikistan where I took a Great Marco Polo Argali. With This Christmas and the new Dean I am tapped. I am on left

Is the biggest frikkin' sheep that I have ever seen!

What did you do with the meat?

Is that the prize of your trophy gathering, or what other greats have you got?

Congratulations, and Happy New Year,

STeven Garsson

DAYUM!!!!! Look at the eyes on that thing.....it's the legendary Tajik Devil Sheep!!!!!!

Steven I lived on sheep meat for 8 days. That trip was along one three flights and then an 18 hr jeep ride offroad to base camp. base was at 135000. the rams live as high as 18000. I shot this one at 16000 ft Pamir mountain range Tajikistan border of afganistan nov 07. As in all time great trophys this ranks up there but I have some african heads and north american rams are way up there on my list of memorable hunts. But I will never get bored of chaseing whitetail bucks right here at home with my bow. thanks for the congrats on the ram I am very proud. It was a long dream getting there. I had a Neil Blackwood hunter on me that has seen it's share of action and a carbon bowie in my pack

Thanks for showing the pic JP. Worth a thousand words.

Happiest New Year, Craig

JP,

I have owned a carbon steel El Diablo...and I loved it.

However....certain makers of carbon blades finish them to such a fine degree that any rust/oxidation shows...Fogg, Foster, Crowell, Andrews and DEAN all come readily to mind.

All my carbon blades reside in Bill's cases, and all are inspected on a monthly basis, with either Marine Tuff Cloth or Miltec-1 applied, depending upon configuration.

Watch your El Diablo regularly, pits WILL develop if you are not vigilant, and Harvey finishes them so finely that you cannot hide flaws...it is one of the reasons that he is so highly regarded...everything is out in the open.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Steven I did notice the fine hand rubbed finish. I to like the marine tuff cloth and use it in the field. Have you tried any of the waxes for light duty use. Thanks for the heads up.

Steven,
Militec isn't helping your rust prevention efforts one bit, I assure you.

Boeshield t-9 works good and Jason Knight is using some blue stuff in a spray can that he says is the best..

But militec will actually CAUSE rust. No shiznit!

I used to use tuf-cloth but don't think it wporks too well unless you really rub it in with the cloth.
