Impressions of the Few Knives I've Bought

So a month or so ago I appeared here looking for a conservative knife to EDC since I felt my Buck 110 wasn't appropriate. I've since bought three folders and a couple of SAK's. I wanted to post my impressions of the folders since none really seem to be "perfect" for me and I'm seeking some input.

BM Mini Grip, 556, partially serrated, black: First knife I bought, thought this would work well for me. The partially serrated blade is really a waste for me. The serrated area is extremely small (but it's a small knife anyhow). The knife is also too small and light for me. I suppose my hands are somewhat large (I'm somewhat large at 6'4" around 360 lbs), but I just don't feel I have control of this knife as it doesn't sit in my hand well. Axis lock is nice, might appreciate it more on a knife that fit me better though. I do like the non-reflective black. Overall a very well constructed knife, no complaints about materials or assembly.

Boker Trance: Bought the same time as the BM above, I keep going back to this knife. While not much larger than the BM length-wise (if at all, don't have both or specs in front of me), this knife is wider and fits my hand much better, even though it is still a very light knife. Much easier for me to open and close this knife. The liner lock works very well for me. I don't notice this knife in my pocket throughout the day like I do the BM (thickness probably plays a part in this). I'm not overly impressed with the style of the blade, and the knife could be slightly thicker in the handle (but that might take getting used to for EDC). I would like a blade that is slightly longer and possibly a bit narrower. Quality is very good, exceptional when you consider the knife costs around $25.

Spyderco Delica Stainless, plain blade, no wave: This is a tank of a knife. It's a bit larger and fits my hand far better than the BM above. It's heavier than either the Trance or the BM - might even be heavier than the other two together! It's probably closer to the weight of my Buck 110! Feels like it was carved from a solid block of steel. In stainless, it looks very sharp as well. I didn't think I'd like the Spyderco blade style based on pics, but up close it is a very nice blade. Not too "scary" that I would be concerned with using it in front of other people (depends on the people of course). I'm getting used to the thumb hole, but the thumb stands on the Trance and BM were more to my liking. I'm really NOT a fan of the back lock. That feature makes it difficult to one hand close. I'll probably get used to it, but it will take a bit more time than Axis or Liner.

So I'm thinking, where do I look next? Full size BM Grip? I'm thinking I'd like something with the heft and size of the Delica only with a thumb stand and liner or Axis lock.

Howdy,
Ontario Knives has discontinued the RAT1, but some on-line stores still have stock. Herewith, a description from a website that still has stock.

"The illustrated Ontario Knife is the Ontario RAT Model 1 Knife, designed by Randall's Adventure Training. This Ontario RAT Model 1 Knife features a 3.25" drop point blade made of AUS8 stainless steel with a Rockwell hardness of 57-59. The blade of this Ontario knife has a non reflective black coat, the RAT logo etch, notched thumb rest for secure grip, and a reversible thumb stud for one hand opening. The textured black fiberglass filled nylon handle, 5.0" closed, has hardened stainless steel liners, heavy duty liner lock and a lanyard hole. A side to side and end to end reversible metal pocket clip is included with this Ontario knife. The Ontario RAT Model 1 Knife has an overall length of 8.6" when open, and weighs 5.0 ounces."

Some of the folks here on the forums reviewed the blade and gave it two thumbs up. A five inch handle should fit your hands well. "fiberglass handle" equates to G10.
Best regards

Benchmade has a huge knife called the Ambush in the Red Class (made in Taiwan), has an AUS8 blade, aluminum body, and the Rolling Lock with Indraft locking mechanism. Overall length is a tad bit over 9 inches.

I, for one, just picked up a BM 555SGY (limited edition mini grip) and am impressed with the overall quality of the knife even though i told myself i would not get a knife with a Zytel Handle.

Well, if you like the Axis lock and want something larger than than the Mini Grip, but the flatter overall profile on the Trance and Delica may be more to your liking, I'd say look at the BM 520 Presidio. While it's thicker than the Delica or Trance, I felt it was not as noticable or obtrusive in the pocket as a the full size Griptilian. The 520 is very solid and does have thumbstuds.

I have one of the Spyderco Para-Military knives and it sounds like this would be a good option for you to consider. If you want bigger, then go for the Spycerco Military (mine is BG-42 steel and cf scales). These Spidies cut like the blazes and are built extremly well.

Good hunting,
Ciao

Go for another Spydie of any sort or you can upgrade to the 520. I've handled it. It's a beast of a knife but handles real well.

If you got big hands, you should like how the Spyderco Manix feels or the Military, like Muzzleup mentioned. The BM 710 has an axis lock too, but it might be too narrow for your hands, not sure.
