Improvements for a 1x42 Delta?

Dan Koster has let me borrow his little grinder for a while, and I got my first knife out of it! When I asked him when he wanted it back he offered to let me by it for a good price. I'm going to use this until I feel the need to upgrade.

SO, what can I do to make it better? the platen tilts back just a little bit. Would a ceramic liner make much of a difference? There isn't a tool rest on this one, would there be an easy way to make a new one?

I know this is a semi-popular cheap grinder. So I didn't know how much improvements can be done or have been done. I search around and didn't see much.

The knife is almost finished, I just need to do some fit and finish work.

I'll post more pictures once it is fully finished.

I've been wondering that same thing. I'm very new to knife making and all my tools are very low-end. That's my only belt grinder aside from my 4x36 horizontal. I don't have anything with a contact wheel, so I'm just trying to learn flat and convex grinding for now. My intent is to save up for something like a Coote( ...or maybe I'd hold out for the KMG) and just use the delta for finishing handles, slack grinding tighter areas, etc... but that's going to be awhile. The platen that came with mine is a little wide and sort of offset. I plan to try to reduce that edge this weekend. I was looking at the ceramic liners at Ellis also. I'd be interested in any feedback people had with those on a 1x42 Delta. I took the table off that came with it. I'm going to just make a little pedestal with a smaller plywood table out of scrap and clamp it to the bench. Anyway.. to make a short story long... :) I think the relatively closed cast frame of this machine tends not to lend itself to a lot of modification.

Anyone have any ideas? I've got a few things drawn up that might work, but will take some rigging. The main thing I want is a small diameter wheel to do some work in tight places. I might try to bypass the top wheel, and make an attachment that comes along the back of the wheel housing that kind of hangs a small wheel out a little farther than the top wheel once it is removed. Not sure how well this will work since this little machine isn't to adjustable.

Or I guess I could just buy a detail sander. Hum....
