Hey guys I was hoping you could give some ideas for an anvil. it doesnt need to do much more than work for putting a bit of curve in a blade, straightening etc. any ideas? i tried to find a good rock but none would work right. the only one i know of is the piece of railroad track but have no idea
how to get a piece.

My anvil is a 4x4x18 piece of 4130 I think.... Used Japanese Cutler style. I first forged with an 8# sledge hammer head in a 5gal bucket of concrete. Go to a junkyard and find a chunk of steel, take it to a local machine shop or technical school and have them cut it square on a horizontal saw. Shouldn't cost you more than $30-40 tops. Radius the edges and there ya go.

My first anvil was a 28" piece of rail set on end. I found it along the tracks after they replaced the rail a few summers ago.

If you've got RR tracks nearby, take a walk, you never know what you'll find. I had to bring the ATV out to bring it back, though.
