i don't have a real strop(yet) so i improvise by stropping on my jeans. when i get done with my ultrafine hone, i stretch the material over my leg and strop about 10 times on either side, alternating of course. i get great edges that often NIB spydercos. anyone else strop in a unique way and get good results?

And I thought I was the only one who did that. I know that some of the old barber style strops have canvas strips on the back. I wonder what would happen if you put some old denim on a piece of maple and rubbed some compound on it.

Another old time trick that works is to final strop your knife on a piece of wood covered with "green" paint. Don't laugh, you see green paint pigment is chromium oxide, and chromium oxide is a very fine abrasive.

Newspaper works well for this.
The ink and paper used acts as a VERY fine abrasive.

I get good results rubbing the back of a notebook with white jewelers rouge. It produces a smooth and polished edge.

At the risk of being obvious, I used to take off my belt, step on one end, and strop on the back. Now I wear suspenders and keep an old rifle sling in my office desk for that purpose. Of course I have some old barber's strops at home.

I met a man who claimed that he get a good result from stropping striaght razor on his palm. I never dare to try, though.

Jeff, I use my belt also. I run the belt through the buckle and cinch it to a small loop that I place over a door knob. Pulling the belt taught cinches it securely and it works fairly well. Woo hoo, I think I have finally hit seniority!

I use the palm of my hand sometimes. More often I use the cardboard backing from a notepad. Got that from the Emerson website.

Can anyone tell me where to buy a razor strop or a suitable piece of leather online?

Allen, you can get real barber strops at www.knifecenter.com

I think these are too large and expensive for the task. Woodcraft www.woodcraft.com sells small strops (leather on wood) and polishing agents. You can also get them at www.craftwoods.com

I have several strops that are just small pieces of thick leather charged with green (chromium oxide) polish. I got the leather for Free by asking for scraps at a boot repair shop.

Glue it down to a board, or just use it on any flat surface and it will do the job just fine.

There have been several good threads recently on strops. Use the search function for the general forum for the last two weeks.

Tim Zowada is partial to using jeans for strop material, as he feels that anything else is too abrasive. He has done some pretty intense studying of the subject, using powerful microscopes to view the edges of varies knives as they make their way through the sharpening process.

I think he had some pics on his web page about them as well, worth a look.

I have used both denim and khaki pant legs for stropping. I have also used the palm of my hand. Most often I use the flesh(rough) side of a piece of scrap belt leather.

Is there any truth to the rumor that stropping too much will make you go blind?!

Funny, deja vu post here. While watching the tube one night I proceeded to clean the blade of my Military on my jeans. With my attention to the tube I lost count on the # of strokes. But after a few minutes I produced an extremely keen edge! I now continue to use the double thick knee/ thigh reinforced Car Hart brand! JIC!

For those who desire a classier strop, try the horsehide paddle offered by Greg kramer gunleather.
