Second, If you can get one from Eric, go with a Ratmandu for $138, it is an absolutely fantastic blade for the money. Check out my review HERE It is a knife that will last them a lifetime, as it is practically indestructible.
If not, then my third choice would be one of the ESEE knives. They have a very good following on bladeforums, with their own sub-forum and the guys there will be happy to help you choose an appropriate knife.
Oh... and buy them the exact same knife so there is no fighting over who gets which knife.
