Just picked a serrated Impulse. I was of the opinion that the best sleeper design out there and the best bang for the buck was the C16 by Spyderco. I have now found what I think is even better. That is the Outdoor Edge Impulse copy of the Darrel Ralph design.
This knife has it all. Great ergonomics, very sharp blade out of the box( as sharp as any Spyderco I have ever handled), and a hanlde that melts into your hand an pocket. Haven't really put the knife to any serious use as of yet outside of some packing straps and opening paper boxes. I have found the knife to stay put where it belongs when cutting, and that is in your hand and also in your pocket when not in use. The pocket clip is ingenous in design and function. Haven't yet once scraped it against anything.
I am sure everyone has done it at one time or another, catch the clip on a corner counter, table or chair. This hugs low and tight in the pants pocket and there is no protrusion of anykind for the clip end to grab. May not be as fast on drawing but for me the security of the carry and how it sits is more than good enough. Not real familiar with the steel used but I know of some custom makers that use it and are happy with it. I have the black colored model and it truly disappears with dark pants on. As for the sharpness well I have yet to sharpen it. It has opened more than a couple of dozen paper boxes and it still shaves hair. Plan on getting the Magna shortly. These just may cure my need to purchase any more folders in the forseeable future. I think they are that good. Keep'em sharp

I agree wholeheartedly, this is a great knife design and I can't believe it's not a huge hit.

Great steel, great design, great ergonomics, phenomenal price, what more could you ask for in a knife?

I agree with the posts here but do have one question. I played with one at a knife show recently and when I opened the blade using the blade hole closest to the pivot, my thumb had a tendency to rub against the handle. Has anyone else noticed this? Otherwise, I feel this is a great knife for the money, feels very sweet in the hand.

I agree with you .. The design is just a bit different than conventional thumbers .. The middle hole was the idea for opening so that access could be had when wearing gloves..
Give it a try.
The holes were designed in the knife for opening , balance and weight reduction. Adding style was part of it also..
With a titainum frame the originals were balanced ..The knife was right at 4 oz
in weight..
As for the steel It is 12c27 It is made in Sweden. I have used it in other situations and found it to be a good cutting steel that holds a good edge.

Hey Spark
Sometimes the sleeper lasts ten times longer than the big wopper hit. We have just got the Impulse to market.
Give it time. :]

I have been happy with it for a couple of weeks. It is nice to have something different then the great Spyderco Hole, or the thumb studs out there. The so called fit and finish of the Impulse is beyond its price.

Thanks Darrel.

Longbow,

Will you try something for me? Open your Impulse to a 90 deg angle with the handle. Then wrist flick it the rest of the way open. How easy is it to close? Mine sticks hard. I love this knife and hope to someday be able to afford a custom from Mr Ralph. I want to know if this is just my knife or all.

Thanks alot,

Drac,

How easy is it to close? Mine sticks hard.

Mine does too. I don't believe this is unique to the Impulse, as in general most liner locks will do the same thing. In my experience, most titanium liners won't last long if you do this. I got a BM Stryker paying a visit to the factory because the liner was worn pretty bad (the liner went all the way to the other side) You can tell the difference between normal wear and flick wear. FYI, I got a cheap Italian Fox folder with stainless steel liner, after so many times I wrist flicked it, the liner still engages on the left side.

BTW, Darrel or David can probably answer this: what kind of metal is used for the liner?

I think it's a really great knife, played with it at the NY show. Also hope to have a Darrel custom someday, he's a great maker and a super nice guy. I just have one question-couldnt they have found a way to make it in America? Not trying to start anything, really, it's just something I always wonder about.

I feel stupid now. I looked over the paper work for my Impulse and the lock is designed to do this. It even says not to flick the knife open. A hardened coating is added to the back of the blade at the lock engagement for a more secure lockup.

Just got my hands on the Magna and Impulse last week and was blown away by both of them. I got them for a friend, but took a few minutes to check them out. I agree with longbow as current bang for the buck the Impulse is one heck of a knife and I cannot come up with a better one for the money.

The Magna costs a little more and is worth the money also. Great blade shape and it seems it could be run over by a tank and come out ok. (maybe maybe not)

I was pleasantly surprised mostly by the fit, finish, action and blades of both of these knives. (Both blades were also shaving sharp.)

I hope things go as well for the COSMOS.

no this is no joke but my impulse closes harder when i open it with my thumb the normal way, it closes very easy when i flick i from the closed or even the 90 deg angle open...
but why?

The Impulse rocks any way you look at it.

I own several Spyderco's, Benchmade's and CRKT's. In summary I feel the Impulse is the most stylish, and best quality tactical folder for the dollar, bar none.

It is my every day carry knife and has served me well for three months. That Cryo-quenched Sandvik 12C27 steel kicks but. Holds an edge and sharpens much easier than my ATS-34 knives.
