In a survival situation what kind of knife?

Probably need to add some more parameters before anyone can give you any helpful information. Where are you planning on surviving? What kind of skillset do you have?

Right now I'm relaxing and watching Netflix, so the ideal survival blade is a small wharncliffe as that's the best at opening my bag of chips.

Your plane goes down and you are stuck on the Cast away island. Scenario 2, You are stranded in the Canadian wilderness. I got a cast iron skillet.

The first I'd want a simple, inexpensive machete, Canadian wilderness I'll take an axe or hatchet over a knife (preferably in addition to a knife, but higher on my list.)

They are very hard to get but you can get them on the Mandalorian Black Market.

In all reality most people will require a budget and a general geographical area to give you a serious answer, otherwise we are just throwing ideas at you with no clue whether it suits your needs or not.

1. TSA isn't going to let any kind of knife on the plane....so you will have to use a piece of the broken plane fuselage as a blade. The only thing you might have going for you is if you are local and use a puddle-jumper who will allow it. In that case, whatever your little heart desires...but as a general rule, puddle jumpers don't go anywhere near Cast Away type islands...only 747/767 type planes.

scenario 2: see #1.

For that kind of dough you can have a nice custom 3-5 inch blade for food prep, skinning, and wood carving/fire prep made. Also I would recommend either an ax or a folding saw depending on your personal preference. Scandi grinds are great because they tend to be easier to keep sharp than other grinds especially when cold temps or inadequate equipment come into play. If you have never owned a decent survival type and with that budget I would recommend trying out a few different styles until you find your personal preference then have something made. Condor knife and tool offers decent beater knives at affordable prices just to try them out.

With all the BS surrounding supposed/not-supposed Pakistani-made blades....you are gonna post that?!? LOL

I wouldn't send my Nemesis to United Cutlery to buy blades.......

Hey, all he gave us was some silly hypothetical situation and finally a budget.
The sword of bilbo baggins is just as good as anyone else's guess.

On LOST the series, John Locke checked in his 400 knives at the terminal and managed to get them from the plane's luggage area once it crashed.
I would say that if you could manage to get stranded on a a tropical island with your knives the best tools you could hope for would need to be durable enough to last forever. Maybe some machetes, axes, BUSSE bowie knives, smaller utility knives like ESEE, and some stainless food prep knives. Don't forget to have some means to sharpen your knives without electricity. Ceramic rods and leather strops will work. A large container of nontoxic grease to keep your blades from rusting.

Edit: I just saw your budget. If your planning on getting stranded on an island, you really should increase your budget. You probably will not need money trapped in a bank account when you desperately need tools to survive. At the least, a few thousand dollars for some quality blades. You only live once.
