in come the ads.....

Really? Your account is still showing up as a registered user. How much is that a year?

I realize that and am not bitching so what's your point?
Anyone that doesn't pay should not come here?
If the owner wants ads, so be it, he deserves $ for his services.
If you paid and don't like the ads, address it with the owner.

Why not go ahead and purchase a membership? You get to sell things, display an avatar (mine is the avatar), and all kinds of other good stuff. Mine paid for itself fast. I would much rather pay $25 a year to this fine website than give eBay more of my money in fees when I want to sell something.

And if I find I use the site often I may.
But that is up to me and time, and the ads don't bother me and I understand that clicking them helps.
Nothing wrong with that as far as I can see.

But a reply like "Really? Your account is still showing up as a registered user. How much is that a year? " is pretty much antagonistic IMHO and makes you think "do i need to spend $ for a wanker response".

My policy has always been that I'm not going to twist any arms or guilt anyone into paying for a subscription. If you don't want the features that come with the subscriptions, don't buy them. I even reinstated search once for non-paying members once it was no longer crippling the servers.

The goal of this site has always been to give something back to the cutlery community. I think it does that, in spades. The people who help keep the site running have my gratitude, and every year there are more of them. Really there isn't anything else to say except remember the golden rule.

Also, banners should be invisible now to people with paid subscriptions.

Bishop, I think there was some miscommunication regarding the tone of your original post. The internet is weird that way and people interpret text the wrong way all the time.

If it got to that point, sure. It'd take a lot for it to get there though.

I was simply responding to your statement that "nothing was free."
I asked how much a registered user account was costing you a year.

I won't ever see the ads because I did pay to support the site.

And I simply said that nothing is free, meaning I understand ads come with the territory on forums, whether I'm a "registered user" and many times if you pay. Spark is nice enough to remove them for paying members.

You, as a paying member, know exactly how much a registered user pays, so you didn't need to ask. It was a shot, antagonistic and meant as an insult, but if that's your style, go with it.
I'm sure it'll pull in tons of paying members.

I don't mind the banners at all, but I do have a question: is anybody else noticing that BF is running and loading A LOT slower since the banners went up?

Maybe some responses from both non-paying members and paying members would be helpful, since obviously the banners are loaded for non-paying members but are left off for paying members.

EDIT: And just as I was posting this, it got bounced back with the message that I have to wait 60 seconds between posts. This is my first post of the day! I hope these are just temporary bugs, because if this is what I should be looking forward to as a non-paying member, sign me up right away!

As a paying member, I am finding that it is taking @ 1 minute to load a page this morning. I've completely logged out and re-booted my computer and still get the same result. Other sites however do appear to be loading at their usual speed.

I'm seeing that myself. I've restarted the httpd daemon and that seems to speed it up.

Sorry, I am new and cannot figure out how to post. Need help!

Uh, right forum, wrong thread.

Never saw the ads, though I do have a subscription. Ads being visible to non-paying members makes perfect sense. You are getting a service for free, need to recoup costs some how. Paying memberships definitely help towards maintaining things....I hope anyway.
