In depth review of my Koster Nessmuk

I have the quickdraw from the maker near Dan. It may just be a design flaw, or mine is messed up, but I can pull the knife out with the strap still snapped. That also means the knife falls out if you turn the sheath sideways. The problem is the knife immediately cuts the small corner that holds on the knife. From then on, it just slides right out.

I think the quickdraw design would work, but it needs a couple improvements. The only thing keeping the knife from falling out is the 1/2" or so that wraps around the choil area of the blade, like where your pointer finger rests. If this were welded so there was no give, it would lock the blade in much tighter. Then put a tighter strap on it so the blade doesn't wiggle at all when the strap is snapped, and I think it'd be good to go.

I'm going to take mine to the guys at JRE and have them make one like I described.

Nostero,

Dan has a fix for the quickdraw sheath. I have the same knife and sheath and had the same problem you describe. The maker, to fix it, puts in a brass rivet where it comes apart at the top. I did however want a horizontal carry for this knife and sent if off to MikeyMoto leather. Here is the link to the pics he sent me along with his notes. I expect the knife in today or tomorrow. I will update with my thoughts on the new sheath in a couple of weeks because I am leaving for an elk hunting trip early Thursday morning. BTW: Great review! I am even more excited to take the knife now!

Yep. That would do it too. Either way I need to get a new sheath. I can't have my Nessmuk falling out onto the ground.

I will gladly replace the sheath, or at least have it fixed to where it doesn't fall out.

This is a problem that has been addressed with the new sheaths...not only did we add a rivet...but we enlarged the welt in that area to hold the knife in there better.

Thanks for the offer Dan.

What I really want to do is piggy back my K5 Karda and my Nessmuk on one sheath.
I've had a ton of luck working with JRE, I think I'll go through them for it. JRE makes a lot of your sheaths now anyway don't they? I need to shoot you an email to talk about getting natural micarta slabs put on my karda.

The MikeyMoto sheath is slick. I'm not sure why he thinks vertical carry wouldn't work well. The interchangeable snap system could certainly accommodate it - perhaps the retention strap wouldn't work as well in that orientation. Is that a micarta bead on braided kangaroo for the lanyard?

Anyway, back to the original review - I can see how the striker tip would cause problems with the quickdraw sheath, unless the bottom pocket extended higher up to the smooth part of the spine. Thanks again for the review!
