Typing this from Ron's computer in Idaho...

Lots of snow, wind, rain -- at temps where we had to protect carefully against hypothermia (felt like winter!).

Charged by a bull moose three times, we scared it off with gunfire, and it never came back.

Lots more, will tell more when I get back home!

Peace,

Brian.

Sigh...I spent the day repairing a leaking pipe. I for one, look forward to your report, glad to hear you had a good trip.

Hi Brian: Glad to hear you made it back safe and in one piece. Sounds like you had great weather for a interesting survival experience. What's that? Oh, I just heard Ron say it ok if you use his shower. He is over there in the kitchen...I just heard him say it. Father's day just around the corner. I look forward to purchasing the video and hearing all about that Moose and other experiences you had. Welcome home people!!

Thanks for the repies!

Ron made us stand naked out in the rain to get clean -- didn't want us soiling his shower stall.

We certainly had a challenge. There'll be lots of lessons in this video about starting fires with wet wood and avoiding hypothermia, etc., caloric consumption from all sorts of factors in the woods, and how to manage your energy properly so you don't burn out and expire...

I'll let Ron fill in details!

Best,

Brian.

BT..

Brian is much smarter than that. His .357, Ray's 44 mag Desert Eagle and my little .45 Glock barely turned that 2000 pound thing around. It took my 100 pound Akita to get him running and keep him away. It was a magnificent sight, caught on video. Us blasting in the air... Moose standing there. Doggie runs snarling, Moose knocks down tree and runs in panic through a willow patch trying to get away.

Dog came back with a smile.

Big dog (English Mastiff -210 lbs) just sat there and played with frogs.

Umm, we're kinda new here, so...

...pardon us buttin' in here folks...but this whole forum looks like the kind of stuff we're interested in, so we hope ya won't take offense.

I'm a "city boy", raised in San Diego, Ca. but did the whole scouting thing up thru Explorers for 6 years, and learned to enjoy the (remote) outdoors...Pacific Crest Trail, etc.

Now at 40, I hike and climb for fun, when I'm not collecting knives...

My wife on the other hand is a Yukoner, born and bred....and that can make for a true wilderness person...she taught me how to pack light and camp deep in the woods.

I figured that with some 25 years of experience with vacations in the wilderness that I kinda knew something...I didn't know "dick all" about wilderness survival, truth be told...

We met over the internet some 3 1/2 years ago, and have been married for 2 now...we're loving life, and I've found a good partner that shares my interests...but I digress...

When I flew up to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, to meet my new internet buddy some 3 years ago, Edna met me at the airport with a carload of camping gear and just said "les' go..."

We headed straight up to Kluane Nat'l park, Yukon Territory... Hell, I didn't even see her place for over a week, we just went camping and hiking for 10 days...

For a minute there I figured that I'd met a Canadian axe murderer, but after 24/7 I realized that I'd met my future wife...lol

Anyhoo...on to the Moose and Grizzly stories
wink.gif

We had a Bull Moose wander into our camp the second night....huge campground...no people, mid August, and I wanted to take pictures of this magnificent beast..."Oh no" Edna says, ya don't want to get too close to that big fella" It looked as if I could have walked under him without stooping!

I was in awe...those are really big animals up there...a huge 4 to 5 year old male OMG! But, alas, I spooked him...and away he went just like a freight train, tearing down the brush and small trees as he went...
eek.gif

A few days later we came over a rise and there was a Grizzly down the slope....he was looking around and sniffing the air and looking right at us from 300 yards away...Edna turned and signaled, "les' go"..and away she went with me in close but reluctant tow...

Later I said that I'd wanted to take pictures and wish we hadn't left so soon, she just looked at me like I had a loose screw...

She then asked if I'd liked eating the fish that we'd caught a few days earlier? "Sure" said I, "They tasted good" "Well, we'd taste good to a bear" she said, and then went on to say that if I persisted in trying to take pictures of a grizzly with my 35mm instamatic she was gonna drop her backpack and run if it charged..."I may not be able to outrun him, but I can sure outrun you" she said...OMFG!

Hmmm....the things we learn...lol

The next day we hiked up the glacier and saw many, many really cool animals, sheep and goats and such...thru the binoculars, the camera was stored for the most part.

Anyhoo, we would love to see your moose pics, and we also plan to stop by to say "hi" from time to time.

Welcome about Sheldon and Edna! Thanks for sharing the story!

We have video of the moose, which will be released as part of Ron's Volume 11 of his Woodsmaster series. You can check out his site at http://www.survival.com.

So Melvin-Purvis you meet this wonderful Yukon woman and take to California : (
Any woman like that needs to stay in the north country! : )

Always liked Yukon folks. Drove the Alcan the first time in 1962 (and glad I had a Jeep). Ended up with about 20 years in Fairbanks. When the retirement check started rubbing against the $1200 mortgage payment ended up in Montana. Still think it's the best country on earth.
And your moose would have tasted good, too.

Thank's, HM. That was a informative and useful visit to Doc Ron's use of the Becker Tac Tool. Burrrr!! Rough weather, Doc Ron. My initial reaction to the Tac Tool was based on the write-up in most publications..."Rugged entry and extraction tool .." I am glad we now have reliable data from the field illustrating the many uses to which the tool can be used for, and if it is hitting your all-time favorite list, I will take a second look at this blade . I have at least one of every Camillus/Becker tool made so far except the Tac Tool. They are excellent tools!! Did you take the Magnum Camp for testing?

FF,

We ended up only taking the Brute and Tac-Tool. The Brute was my also my main blade for the trip, and held its edge and coating superbly throughout the journey. I'd trust it anywhere. Still can't believe it's only $90-100 retail! I hammered on the tang with a wood baton, drove it hard through wood to split it -- it laughed at the punishment and asked for more! It chopped and chopped and never let me down once. I dug post holes for shelter in the ground constantly, and just spinning the blade into the ground, it functions as a nice "dirt-drill."

The Tac-Tool is one of my new favorites -- I'm gonna get one ASAP. One of the most all-around useful wilderness tools I've EVER come across. You can dig hard with the little top edge which preserves your main cutting edge. Although it's only a 7" blade, it chops like a big 10"!

Nice write-up on the Brute and the Tac-Tool! We'll have to look into getting one of each of those.

As far as "Does she have a sister?" Yes, Edna does have a sister that's both bright and good looking as can be. Unfortunately, she's very married to a Canadian welder who works for the oil exploration industry in upper NWT.

Great guy, but I wouldn't want to push him too far.
wink.gif

As to the comment, "Ya brought her down to California, she should be up there still.." That was her choice, not mine....-60' wasn't working for me...sorry.

Besides, she's happy down here...grunt to manager in a year? Yeah, I'd say they recognized her inner core strength...lol

The only complaint I've heard so far has been, "Can you believe they want me to wear a dress to work at least once a week? A dress even?" Argghh...lol

The story about the guy that dropped a file on her desk and said "file this" was priceless...

"Excuse me?" she said as she got up and walked around to meet him face to face, picking up a business card and the folder as she went...

"This card says Manager, not file clerk, so if you want it filed, you file it yourself" Edna said as she handed him the card, and then stuck the folder back into his chest...

"And please don't come back until you've checked your attitude..." Bwahahaha!

He was humbled, and has been apologetic since.

Yeah, a real handful...but a great friend.

Thanks for the write up's, still waiting for the Moose pics...

Talk at cha soon...
