ive been grinding some blades that have turned out rather nice but they are not the bevels ive been shooting for.ive seen some tutorials on grinding jigs and they dont seem to work to well.maybe its my technique.i just dont know what grit of belt i should use first or what degree i should start.do i grind to the center line of my blade on my first pass or should take a little off untill i get down to the center?any words of wisdom will be a great help.

As a beginner I would recommend Johnny Stouts Guide to Hollow Grinding (video or CD) It will answer all of your questions and even some you have not thought of yet. Well worth the investment.

Johnny Stout's video is good, but for start-to-finish help on grinding, Steve Johnson's "How To Build A Subhilt Fighter" is invaluable. Whether it's your intention to do double edge or not, the methods he documents will help anyone!

A better bet, though, is to find someone willing to let you come by their shop and watch - there's no replacement for watching with your own eyes. Find a hammer-in and get to it, there's always tons of people to help at 'em!

The best advice I recieved was from the Johnny Stout video. Grind your edge to 45 degrees and set your final thickness on the edge. The advice is to keep a little gap between the edge of the blade (edge you want to keep) and the belt. As long as you have the gap you are grinding where you need to be without running out of edge. In the beginning the gap will be large (thickness of the material you are going to remove) and in the final it will go to nothing. All along you will need to adjust your gind to make sure you dont grind to high on the blade, always managing the gap vrs the height of the grind. Hope that is not too confusing.
