In praise of prybaby

Is the Ti version as tough as the S30V version? i've been wanting one of these things for a long time now, but never did. but this thread rekindled the fire :D

T. they're on my site now and available. :)

Thansk for the kind words guys!

Madfast, the S30v is the tougher tool but the ti is prettier. Life is full of trade offs...... ;)

I see the Bug out Bars are on your site, but not the Bug Out Blade...

Has the B. O. Blade been discontinued? :(

For now. Don't worry, I'll probably make more but I have alot of other projects cooking at the moment so I didn't want tons of inquiries over something I don't have.

I recently got one of Peter's Bug Out Bars and it kicks ass! I'll never have to worry about using a knife for prying with now. I never thought a pry bar could be so nicely built and finished.

Atwood rocks :)

Yeah, wow.

And I just have to add that over my spring break (it's already been one week, one more to go  ) I've been painting my kitchen, and have been using my Prybaby daily. Opening paint cans, helps to pry up hindge pins, pull off metal trim, open my drink (non-alcohol  ) at the end of the day :D , stuff like that.

Peter, I know I'll be getting some of your very neat & useful tools sometime. I need to have a Prybaby, a Bugoutbar and at least two Whistles (gotta get one for the wife, too). Unfortunately I just had to sink eleven hundred dollars into my car, just this past week. Gotta keep motoring, so I can make money to buy more neat stuff! When finances allow I'll be emailing you.

Gadget Mania is a pile of fun! :D :D :D

I've got 'em when you're ready. :) I just put a load of Prybabies® and Bug Out Bars into the heat treat oven a little while ago.....

I have question, sorry if discussed before.......... why s30v?
for something like Prybaby why is s30v better then aus 6a, 420j, or generic stainless steel which is less expensive, tougher, and easier to heat treat?
Thank you
Martin

I use my prybaby to pry with, paint cans and nails. Works fine and my knives are grateful. But opening bottles is too difficult with it, or mine at least. It slip off the cap and the tool itself is too short to get enough leverage. It hurts my hand too much. Am I just doing it wrong? I have the lanyard end towards me with my fingers underneath and my thumb pressing down on the side of the pry-er. The screwdrive digs into my palm pretty painfully.

The best way to open bottles with it is to put it on your keys. That gives you a bit of extra leverage. I try to leave a bit of a flat spot on the part that catches the cap but sometimes it can get a little rounded when I buff. Let me know if that is the case.

Why S30v? Because it is much tougher than the other steels you mentioned. I made 1 or 2 with ATS34 back in the beginning and the forks couldn't take the abuse like the S30v.

Just recently I started making the tools out of slightly heavier stock (.160). This allows for a steeper angle on the grinds thereby increasing leverage a tiny bit. It also makes the tip even stronger.
