In Praise of the Lockback

Stunning pictures everyone, keep them coming!

Love a good backlock. Feels more solid than most other locks and has such a good sound.

Absolutely! I love the sound of a lockback.

A.G. Russell was notorious for creating unique designs. Many of his lockbacks have a coil spring under the lock release instead of a spring bar. The first picture was difficult to take but you can just barely see the coil spring.

Interesting, I wonder if there's any particular advantage to a coil spring?

This is my favourite with a back lock, at least functionally. Gekko 1550. Rock solid & super smooth. Hydraulic, like a Sebenza. Very sturdy knives, definitely more of an outdoorsy kind of folder. The Gekkos are also some of the best folders ergonomically Ive had, at least for my hand. Really good jimping on these. Rounded back & spine. Sadly no longer in production. Scales were originally a more greenish tone, but turned brown over the years.

Below is a quote from A.G. Russell regarding the knife that I posted above. Personally, I haven't used the knife enough to comment on it holding up longer but I do notice the exceptionally smooth action.

"Just like the larger version, the lock is designed with a space saving coil spring, which I prefer because it will hold up longer, giving more life to the knife. It also makes the action smoother; therefore, the knife is easier to open and close."

The inner workings of the 1550 are also quite interesting. It has two torsion bar springs on the outside of the liners, but none inside the blade well. I just took the scale off real quick to take a photo. Worth mentioning that even with the pivot screw completely removed, there was still no hint of blade play. Actually reminds me of the types of springs I often encounter in clock movements.
