In praise of the mini griptilian

I have the yellow handle version as I use it a lot in the gardens and orchard, you CAN'T lose this one at all! first rate ergonomics and opening/closing.Axis lock is fantastic, the 154 sharpens with ease.Right size for me,strong but not bulky or clumsy.Just wish there were more handle versions, that green one in a previous post was unknown to me,custom wood would be really something. I prefer the stud opening, holes are a Spyderco speciality in my view. Like the Opinel or SAK it's a must have user the Mini G

Even a bunch of better colors would be nice. I like the yellow, but a burnt yellow like craftsman would be cool. The blue they have is almost light blue. I'd rather see navy or royal, the pink is certainly girl pink. I might go for a hot pink, but not girl pink. Some bright reds and bright orange colors would be cool as well.

Great knife nevertheless and I like my yeller one just fine. I won't be getting the urge for a new color though, at least not a blue, green or pink one. Those aren't the prettiest shades of those colors, in my opinion.

Black is black and the hunter green is nice, but I'd lose it.

I have a green 556, just so friendly looking, nobody seems to bother me about it. I love it:) Here it is with my Cabela D2

I have the full size grip in 154CM, with black handle and thumb studs. Ijust bought the wife the pink mini grip and she loves it. After playing with it for awhile, I realized that it IS the perfect size for EDC. In fact, if it wasn't pink, I would probably carry it myself. Heck, I'm tempted to anyway!

I like the fact that they come in colors, too. But I agree that most of the color options miss the mark for me. I wish they had a dark blue like Spyderco has offered in the Delica. That is a nice, classy, non-threatening color, but still subdued.

On the plus side, this is one of the few knives that can be had in feminine colors and I am sure that is nice for the few women who would value a knife like that, and also like the idea that it can look feminine.

Mine is basic black with an uncoated blade. Nice, but kind of plain.

What model mini-grip is that has that wider blade than the others? Mine is different and I think I like the wider one better.

That is a Ritter Grip, designed by Doug Ritter and only available through him.

It has a wider blade of s30v, in a full size it's a 552 model and in a mini it's a 558.

Here's a link to the mini 558.

The Ritter Survival Knife (RSK) has a higher flat grind, so it is a little more acute behind the edge. The thumb rest is larger. Nice steel. Overall a very nice knife, but also a step up in price from the 154CM versions. Sold through Aeromedix.

How do you think the thumb hole compares to the thumb stud on this knife?

I was wondering this myself. Got to handle one for the first time the other day, a thumbstud version, but I like the more utility-looking blade on the round thumbhole one, but haven't got to play with that version.

after being shocked on how smooth it is to open and close, I was shocked by how much I liked the plastic handle. looks almost as nice as G-10 unless you start looking for mold lines in the nooks and crannies.

I prefer thumbstuds to holes. With a thumbstud you are just pushing the blade forward, but with a hole you have to push across to maintain friction with the hole's edge, while pushing forward at the same time. I know - it's not difficult, and the 555HG opens just fine, but I prefer thumbstuds.

I like the 555's sheepsfoot blade, but would love to see one with thumbstuds - a blade like the 670 Apparition's in a Mini Grip.

I really liked my Mini Grip. I wish it had G10 handles, but...It had a great blade/handle ratio-something I wish more knives had. Will absolutely get another one in time.

551S 154CM and a 943 S30V

-Make a big Grip with a handle 1 inch longer, and I will buy one.

I've had a 555HG for about two years now. It is the most used of my EDC stable. Yesterday I used it to remove a bunch of weeds out of my yard. It was muddy and filfthy but the axis lock worked perfectly. Got inside an soaked it in warm soapy water and rinsed it off. Looks like new except for the pocket clip. Great knife.

ya i know im beating a dead horse. i got a 551 hg and i love it. just wish it had different handle materials. i think that is what is hiolding me back on buying more...maybe ill get the fixed blade griptilian...hmmm
