In Praise of the Native

While I realize that some of the more experienced forumites will roll their eyes when they see another thread in praise of the Native, I just can't NOT say something about the high quality of knife to others! Last night I was strolling through my local Wal-Mart and saw the Native's picture on the display case. It just seemed to be calling my name!

While I have many Spydercos including several Military models, Chinooks, a Little Temperance, the Caly3, a Pacific Salt, a Dragonfly, and a host of others that are not coming to mind or are antiquated, I have never handled a Native. I asked the girl behind the counter in the sporting goods section to handle it and promptly bought it for $42.14.

I cannot believe such an ergonomic, sharp, high-performance blade made in the United States out of such good steel (CPM S30V) can be had for such a low, low price. It is the greatest general-knife buy one could ever hope to receive, especially from a major retail outlet. The build was flawless...after hearing complaints about negative lockup and minor cosmetic flaws, I checked the blade prior to purchase. The grind was even, the lockup incredibly solid, all the pins in place and the FRN handle perfectly molded and extremely comfortable in the hand. The knife opened smooth and was razor sharp. It was a quintessential example of an American product being comparable in price to foreign goods but so vastly superior in quality. Now, that Native rides in my pocket instead of my more expensive Spydercos and other blades just because I can't get over it. It is one of the best EDCs I've seen.

In summation, thanks Spyderco for making such a quality product I can buy without thinking about and use without worrying about! Your dedication to the customers and our service is commendable! More experiences to follow...

God bless you, America, and our men and women overseas.

KATN,

Wade

+1 Wade! The Native (to me) is best production knife out there that gives the most bang for the buck.

I'd have to agree. While I don't carry one, for the money, I'm not sure any knife can compare. Even Spyderco's Tenacious, while nice, doesn't even come close as far as blade steel performance. While it's arguable just how good S30V is, I think we all can agree that it's one of the best & I can't think of another folder with similar spec, that can realistically be bought for under $50.

I wish it had the Native III's wire clip, but for the price, what can you expect. Also, I like the blade/handle choil that Spyderco uses. It enables one to get a large hand onto a small-med. size folder & IF the lock failed, it's not going to close on your fingers (At least it shouldn't).

The Native was my first Spyderco, but not my last. After re-profiling the edge a bit thinner, it is one of my favorite knives. I might have to get the new one this fall? to compare them. Course it won't be the value a WW Native is.

I recently had a similar experience and had to try one out. So far I am very impressed the lockup is rock solid and it fits great in my hand. It is my first Spyderco and so far I am very impressed that even their lower cost knives are such good quality. I was looking for a cheap beater at Walmart, and I couldn't pass up on S30V at under $40

The Native hooked me......I wanted 2 Spydie`s to carry a while back. Grabbed the Native then a Deli4, so that makes 8 in my EDC rotation. How did that happen?

A good question. I started with a Native and now I have over 25 Spidies...and I collect Buck!

I just picked one up on a whim today. I like it but I'm still kind of getting used to it and I'm sure I'll never like it more than my D4W. There's nothing that I can say is actually wrong with the Native, and there are plenty of things that are very right (especially the price) but for me there are some things about the Delica that make it well worth the extra money. A Native 4 with nested steel liners and torx screw construction may win me over if it should ever come into existence. Until that happens (if it happens) I'll probably stick with my D4 for my EDC. I will give the Native a day or two in my pocket at work and see if it grows on me as I use it more.

The Native is arguably the best all-around knife out there.

Cutting edge is 2 5/8" making it legal in a large number of jurisdictions.
Tough as nails.
Superior steel.
Light as a feather.
Ingenious grind and ergos.
Great price point and warranty.

And lastly, it looks good. Actually it looks like a work of art--functional art--to me at least.

A Native was my first Spydie, now I have SIX of the little buggers!

Don't even ask how many other Spydies I have (with more enroute as we speak!) - I blame it all on that one little knife!:D:D

BUG
