In search of a hat...

If you talk to Alex Tilley or read his stuff, you will find that the original Tilley hat was designed with sailing in mind

Just got myself a Tilley today. I've seen them suggested whenever the hat topic comes up on these forums but had never been motivated enough to order one on line. But I saw them in a hat shop in the city recently so picked one up.

For hard core bush/desert walks I'll still stick with the frillneck system as mentioned in the pervious post - but a good hat for kicking around in an general summer recreation (like disc golf -my new sport) is essential in West Oz - skin cancer capital of the world. In summer here you have to get so used to wearing a hat that you feel naked without it so I'm prepared to be fussy and look for something that's just right.

Interestingly they don't seem that expensive. $100 or so isn't too much to pay for a well made hat. Most people in the bush here will happily part with over $150 for an Akubra.

I got the hemp TH5. So far so good. It's comfortable, cool and looks ok I reckon. I played 4 hours of disc golf in 37 deg C (100 deg F) last Sauturday and forgot I had it on my head. I still sweated under it but in that kind of heat that will always happen. I liked it so much I went back to the hat shop the next day and got another one in a lighter colour (the natural un-died hemp) - the lighter colour will reflect the sun better on the fiercly hot days (100 deg isn't that hot for these parts)

Take a look at Watership Trading Companine. I have one of these in waxed cotton - http://watership.imperialheadwear.net/main.php?navarea=Hats&code1=HVN&code=TAX&season=Fall/Winter and couldn't be happier.

It offers great sun protection, high degree of water resistance ( it will last about 60-90 min in a heavy downpour before water starts to permeate), is packable and floats.

I have been tempted to buy a Tilley, but I like just like the look of waxed cotton more.

Good luck.
