IN THE END, THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE

I hear many people say that they like one production knife brand over another, for various reasons. I don't have a very very large knife collection, but I do have various knives from various production brands that I like very much. I've often thought if one ever had to give up their collection and choose only one knife, fixed or folder, what knife would it be?
I know some of you guys have heard this asked before, but it's interesting to see individual tastes as knife trends come and go.

Here's one for the "Threads you've heard a hundred times before... Pages: 1 2" thread which is ongoing right now.

Well cid, Maybe wonder moderator

has read it before. I haven't.

My choice would probably be either a Fallkniven S1 or a Busse Steelheart E, depending on available funds. If I can only have one, I want one that's going to perform and outlast me. I say the same about my choices in significant others, too.

Well, I've heard it before but it's always fun to think about. My tastes change.

I happened to be thinking about this last night. First I thought, "Could I get by with just one?" (obvious answer is no) But if I had to (maybe some Massachusetts law that leaked out into the US as a whole) I'd guess I'd go for my William Henry Evolution Wharncliffe. Handiest knife I've got - kinda grows on ya'.

Non-controversial signature line follows: I like William Henry fine knives.

I only seem to recall 5 or 6 previous iterations of this thread, so will once again shamelessly hog bandwidth posting a pic of my choice.

It is a 5" drop point hunter with Talonite (r) blade, linen micarta scales by Tom Mayo, a knifemaker located in Hawaii.

This knife is corrosion proof, yet the blade will hold an edge for a very long time, and resharpen easily, even with improvised methods. Gotta love it.

Wow. I was just thinking last night (no lie) about which one this would be. And tastes DO change, which is why this thread always interests me. Here' mine, and I fully admit to cheating by choosing one fixed and one folder.
Fixed: Dozier Elk Hunter (thanks Gene!!!)
Folder: Small Seb (thanks RGRAY...for the advice, not the knife!)
The Elk Hunter is the coolest Dozier I've yet owned (fixed blade, that is). The pics don't do it justice.
(yeah, I know, next week ya'll can razz me when you see it FS/T

My idea of the quality of the cognitive abilities of ANYONE who would suggest a FOLDER as an ultimate survival knife:

And the meercats stand behind me on this; it should be noted that they live in the Gobi desert, and as such, are regarded as experts on survival.

Microtech LCC M/A but that might change when my Elishewitz Phantom gets here in the next couple of days.

Ah, but Walt, el Cid didn't specify that it was to be a "survival" knife, nor did he establish whether or not we are to suppose a world where current regulations are still in effect. If current regulations are in effect, my one and only knife has to be one that won't get me arrested if I carry or use it in public. Hence, my one and only might very well be a folder.

El Cid, can my "one knife" be multiple specimens of the same model? If so, make mine a Spyderco Endura. If not, I'm pretty happy with my Sebenza.

Stop when you get to bone.

If I were lost in the wilderness-Cold Steel SRK, Buck Intrepid, WSI Ranger,or Kabar Warthog.
If I had to defend myself-Spyderco Gunting or Emerson Commander.
If I had to fix something-SOG Powerlock, Gerber Legend 800, or Kershaw Multi-Tool.
Every day carry and use-Spyderco Native, Benchmade Mel Pardue, or Klotzli Wharncliffe folder.
Whoops, that's more than one isn't it?

It really depends on the situation what one knife some one might find most valuable. Take care!

Custom Strider folder. It doubles as a pry bar. It is folder you will want if you some how lived through a nuclear war.

David; you are absolutely right; I got my multiply recurring threads mixed up.

This is the 'If you had to pick one out of all of the ones you have/could have' (no reason for doing so specified) thread.

I thought it was the 'If you had to pick only one out of all the ones you have/could have to take to a desert island' thread.

My humble apologies.

Well Walt... As far as I know, the meercats are indeed experts in survival...and they dont have any knife at all. So I think a folder is better than what the meercats have, (nothing).

arinvolvo; you have obviously overlooked the meerkats' teeth and claws, which give them a choice of many sharp objects. None of which fold up.

If you want the ONE knife.....you should make it yourself...then you will value it above all else.
