Some time ago, I designed a knife model called the 'Sentinel' for a Canadian tactical training company, who was going to have 120 made by a custom cutler. I won't go into details, so I'll just say it didn't work out:rolleyes:

Well, the pattern sat and sat until recently. I've been wanting to work with Nathan Carothers for quite awhile now, so I reached out to him to see if he'd be interested in working on a project with me. Turns out, he's been wanting to produce a field knife- something basic, useful, affordable and good looking. I thought my Sentinel pattern would fit the bill, so I sent it his way.

After reworking some aspects of the pattern to better jive with his other models, we came up with what you see here. We've come up with the super imaginative name for it- 'Field Knife', lol :D

Latrobe A2 with a very specific heat treat, and textured micarta scales are what make this knife what it is. This knife has a very keen, thin edge, (15 degrees per side). Our thinking was that, with the scraper built into the butt of the handle to take on prying duties and other abusive tasks, we could get away with a highly functional, slicey edge.

The handle has weight relieving holes milled through the tang, and the knife weighs in at 240 grams. It's handle heavy, which makes for a manueverable blade, although if you grip near the butt of the handle, the slightly dropped blade will generate some power. The blade is 4 1/2", and the handle is 5".

This knife is incredibly sharp. I've heard that; 'only sharp knives are interesting', and by that metric, this is one of the most interesting knives I'm ever held. I'm really looking forward to testing this piece, and as I get the time to do that, I'll post my impressions.

Looks like a nice, clean, useful design to me. I like it. Looking forward to your feedback. Mike

Hey I recognize that knife!

Here's a shot taken from a distance to reduce perspective effects so you can get an accurate idea of the shape

I'm really pleased how this turned out. Collaborating with Lorien has been a good experience.

Wow, now that looks like all kinds of useful, a truly potent collaboration!

I just noticed the prying feature on the butt end. While that certainly has potential, my feeling is that a squared off face for hammering may be even better...?

Just a thought...

That's a great looking knife from all aspects.

Love your in-use videos Nathan and Lorien. They give one a much better sense of the knife's proportions and looks, how it functions, and how it fits the hand. Looks good to me. Thank you. Mike

wait til you see tomorrow's vids :)

A2 is always intriguing, and the design is awesome -sign me up for one, than when 3v comes out I can order one of those as well,..... great job guys

Fantastic stuff! Beating on cinder blocks is all very well but its great to see Nathan showing how well the knife does food prep - a much more likely end use in my experience!

Well, that's how I use my knives anyway. When it comes to wood hewing, I generally choose an axe.

Yup, can't wait. Still want a slot!

This and the pig sticker, and you are ready for pretty much anything(add a small hand ax too)! oOOo Nathan, next project... small hatchet.

Unfortunately, I screwed up with the camera and didn't get any of the long distance throws, (+/- 22').

The handle is still very secure, the fasteners held firm. No chips or chunks missing from the handle scales.

The edge suffered a little damage due to going point first into the rocky ground, (more than once).

This knife throws pretty well, surprisingly consistent!

Well that looks like a lot of fun. Will these come with "Lorien's Complete Guide to Field Knife Throwing"? Although, I'm not sure I could bring myself to throw one. Get two! That's the ticket. Mike
