Some time ago, I designed a knife model called the 'Sentinel' for a Canadian tactical training company, who was going to have 120 made by a custom cutler. I won't go into details, so I'll just say it didn't work out
Well, the pattern sat and sat until recently. I've been wanting to work with Nathan Carothers for quite awhile now, so I reached out to him to see if he'd be interested in working on a project with me. Turns out, he's been wanting to produce a field knife- something basic, useful, affordable and good looking. I thought my Sentinel pattern would fit the bill, so I sent it his way.
After reworking some aspects of the pattern to better jive with his other models, we came up with what you see here. We've come up with the super imaginative name for it- 'Field Knife', lol
Latrobe A2 with a very specific heat treat, and textured micarta scales are what make this knife what it is. This knife has a very keen, thin edge, (15 degrees per side). Our thinking was that, with the scraper built into the butt of the handle to take on prying duties and other abusive tasks, we could get away with a highly functional, slicey edge.
The handle has weight relieving holes milled through the tang, and the knife weighs in at 240 grams. It's handle heavy, which makes for a manueverable blade, although if you grip near the butt of the handle, the slightly dropped blade will generate some power. The blade is 4 1/2", and the handle is 5".
This knife is incredibly sharp. I've heard that; 'only sharp knives are interesting', and by that metric, this is one of the most interesting knives I'm ever held. I'm really looking forward to testing this piece, and as I get the time to do that, I'll post my impressions.
