In the field with Nathan

Fellows you did a great job with that knife. I really like the realistic testing videos too. When I first starting making knives I kept trying to make that knife that would hammer through bricks without any edge chipping and still slice a tomato cleanly. In my experience this just isn't realistic.

I would like to own one of those, smart design.

I was fortunate to snag one and it arrived yesterday. Haven't had a chance to cut anything with it yet, except it shaved some leg hair VERY easily. The sheath fit is also very snug, a feature I appreciate.

I've been beating on this field knife for a little over 4 months now; cutting roots and moss mats, chopping stuff, whittling, throwing it- really, a wide assortment of pretty abusive tasks.

Last time I was out, I spent a little time tuning the edge with a keychain sized DMT hone, which was not nearly enough to bring the edge back very well. But, that was the only time I'd spent any time tuning the edge at all, and considering the abuse, the A2 blade of my field knife has been holding up like a champ.

I just spent 20 minutes re edging my knife, and I was blown away by how well it took to the stones. REALLY easy to remove material which surprised me since it seemed really abrasion resistant in the field. Kudos to Nathan Carothers and Peter's Heat Treating for the impressive work!

Lorien,

There is nothing wrong with using a rag to rub a little oil on the blade after you beat the hell out of it.

Even users like oil on occasion!

bah! This one is for destroying :devilish:

Seriously, though, the neglect is intentional since this is a test piece. So far, this knife impresses the hell out of me. I'd like to compare it to the 3V version at some point.

Lorien,

I know that you are testing the knife, I just don't like to see them rustier than they have to be. You are testing the strength of the knife and how it keeps an edge, you already know that it isn't stainless.

Mine is 3V and the first thing I did is coat it with A.G. Russell's "RustFree."

It will be a user, but hopefully I won't abuse it too much.

I'm trying to test all aspects. Including neglect!

Different carbon steels react differently to corrosion/oxidization, and what I want to see here is depth of pitting, how and where the corrosion occurs, etc. Basically, the idea here to to simulate the treatment of this knife by the most ignorant of knife users. Which is actually pretty easy for me, lol!

Here are a couple quick vids I just shot after the re edging;

Haha, people keep sending knives to Lorien to destroy. Not a bad gig!

^ don't listen to them Lorien, you can have all the knives to destroy that you want... :D

bring em on buddy!

ps. how's that chopper coming...? :)

it's gonna be rad. If I do say so myself.

some small amount of time has elapsed since this all went down, but I thought this might be of interest to some.

I finally, (almost) completed the blank I had waterjet cut long ago. This is the progenitor of Nathan's take of my og design and although there are obvious differences, you might be able to spot a similarity or two here and there.

Unfortunately, I screwed up when I laminated the various layers of G10 together, so there are a very visible air bubbles that didn't show themselves until the very end. I had planned on turning this knife into money, but I really don't think I can sell it with these imperfections. So, I guess I will have a new knife for me to carry around. I'm beginning a new career in knife making, and I learned a hell of a lot putting this knife together- so I consider it tuition.

Just have to sharpen it and build a sheath.

Yes, just a small amount of time has passed.

Wow! It doesn’t feel like it’s been that long at all.

Blade is looking good 👍
