Use whatever the locals are using... be it a parang, machete, bolo, or whatever. More often than not they are very cheap, like 5$ or so. You can wait to buy the knife when you are in country.

That is definitely one way yo go and while you may not get a great blade you will definitely get a good keepsake/momentous of the trip... u still have the machete that my dad bought in Saigon and carried for his time in danang ... basically just sharpened heavy gauge sheet metal from what I can tell with a crudely rivited handle but hey it got him through the worst of times and is still here as a family keepsake.
I'm actually planning to replicate it next veterans days as a commemorative piece...
In the other hand the down side is the local made stuff is probably just sharpens sheet metal as well and when in remote areas i like to know and trust my gear.... if I didn't have time to make something for myself I'd grab a kukri house butcher kukri... now that they have a us distributor they usually ship in a couple of days... and while they may be.mystery steel (leaf springs and such) they do a good job if making a consistently tough blade.
