In the market for a new benchstone

Can you glue a 60 grit to the back of the plate you have with the 180 attached? This is such a great idea. Who would have thought to use stone flattening tools to flatten our stones!

I believe you can. The only downside and one I discovered very early on - the plate/bond layer is very strong, perfect for grinding stones. It works poorly for grinding steel until you get into the smaller particle sizes, and even then it is not as good as the plates made for sharpening - largish burrs, cuts slowly.

The 8" plates are more than enough, a 6" one would probably work as it is just a lot of surface area compared to a longer rectangle, the shape makes it easier to maintain a flat surface.

On a different site I found a 12" Diamond Embedded Grinding Disc in several grits intended for pottery for about $70 each.
