Walking home tonight I dropped in at the purveyor of spirits on my block in hopes that they got some Elijah Craig in (not as easy to find in NYC as youd think) and noticed that while they had no EC, they had some Rebel Yell

Having never tried it (and still not sure if you guys seriously think its decent or are just being rediculously sarcasic :)), I decided to give it a whirl for the shockingly low price of $14.99

Havent tried it yet, but I'll be back in a few hours with my report :D:D:D

Nice. I just cracked open a bottle of Glenlivet Naddura 16 year. I'm not a big Scotch fan but this one I like, it spends 16 years in American oak and reminds me of Bourbon. I'll have to keep an eye out for some Rebel Yell, can't be any more harsh than Jim Beam :)

I recently bought a bottle Jim Beam Kentucky Straight Bourbon and DIN'T like it at all!!! Horrible!!!
So I made up for it and bought Knob Creek!!! It's my favorite!!!

I have an identical TB (Bama Clay + Tan Canvas Micarta), and it's my favorite one. Nice bourbon, too.

Yeah man Jim is nasty stuff...I would sooner use it to strip my BWM than put it in my belly. Knob Creek is good stuff for sure. You should try Woodford Reserve sometime it has a really great flavor.

Maker's Mark 46 is really really nice. Totally different from regular Maker's which I also like.

What a decent cheap bourbon to try, see if they have George Dickel. For the money, that one isn't bad at all.

Actually Woodford is my second choice. Virtually a tie!!! It is great!!!

Woodford is my staple. Basil Hayden is real good as well, a bit pricier. Comes out of the Jim Beam distillery, as does Knob, Bookers and Bakers.

Good luck with that rebel yell. Its good to have lots of ice and something shoot at if you're drinking the rebel.

As I understand it, Jerry really likes Rebel Yell. I've not gone down that road yet, but I wouldn't turn my nose up at it if it were offered, at least once. Bourbon doesn't have to be expensive to be good. There are several sleepers out there for pretty cheap, like Weller Special Reserve for $13-15/750ml (7yrs old, 90proof, a Wheater... and a solid value any day of the week).

Same whiskey, btw, just 20 proof stronger and 5 years older...

I like Knob Creek, but I think the three stand-outs in the Jim Beam line are:

Baker's 107proof
Old Grand Dad 114proof
Booker's barrel proof

OGD is delicious and the second highest proof whiskey from the Beam folks, and an exceptional value at ~$25-28. Booker's is only slightly better, IMO, but at twice the price of OGD114. And Baker's is in the middle, and really quite good.

Wow! I didn't know those were of the same distillery!!
I did know about the age and proof difference. They seem to "make" the difference.
I found Bookers (haven"t tried it yet though) here but negative on the OGD and Bakers.

To be complete, the overall flavor difference comes from more than just the bottling-proof and age - the two whiskeys are surely aged in different parts/floors/warehouses at the Beam facilities which makes a big difference, but it is true that the very same whiskey goes into both barrels at the beginning of the aging process. Same goes for Booker's. Booker's is literally just barrel-strength 6-8yr Jim Beam. So similar, yet so different, with common roots.

You know way too much about wiskey. I really like Makers. I have never tried Rebel Yell but please let us know how it is.

I don't know about anyone else around here but I love Rye. That being said it is hard to beat a bottle of Wild Turkey, that is some bang for the buck right there. I just saw (ri) whiskey earlier and after doing a little research I found out it is another member of the Beam family.

I keep different stuff around for different purposes, right now my favorite mixing stuff is Jack Green label. Buffalo Trace is also good for the $$. As for the sipping stuff I tried Eagle reserve recently and really liked it.

Ever give Sazerac Rye a shot? Pretty good stuff if you're a rye lover.

i'm glad you added that detail about Beam's ownership of the various brands. i was getting a bit frustrated for a minute...which i now find a bit sad that i was getting upset because someone didn't know that they were mainly being fooled by clever marketing (...um, spyderco?) Anyway, good post. I just bought a bottle of 12 year Aberlour. It's OK. I'm finding that I just don't enjoy the malts/years that are heavily aged in sherry casks. I enjoy the flavor of a good sherry but it seems to detract from the depth of the malt, for me that is. i really like the depth and sensation of carmel in a well aged scotch...it seems to get me thinking. anyway, thanks for the post:thumbup:

Funny you mention that. I went to the store earlier on a quest for rye. Unfortunately they did not have very much of a selection, well that is if you can call two different varieties a selection :) I walked away with a bottle of Scotch instead. When I got home I started looking up different Ryes and saw that Sazerac is held in high regard by many, and it's not too pricey either. It is definitely on my list now.

Man, I knew I should not have opened this thread. I have been "hummin' " Billy Idol for the last 2 hours. Anybody got anything related to Queensryche ??? :)
Be safe.

I love Rye. Here's a quick camera-phone shot of my open bottles. They're all pretty good - but the Thomas Handy, Van Winkle, and Baby Sazerac are the only ones I make it a point to keep in stock as I never want to be without them in my home bar.

As for the (ri), I have a mixed opinion. First, it is - quite simply - a 4yr Rye from the Beam folks. That, along with the actual taste (which is pretty good, but not outstanding, IMO) make it a $20 whiskey being marketed and sold for $40+ as an attempt to cash in on the booming small-batch/martini/fancy-drink scene, and that gets on my nerves.

Much like trying to get INFI prices for INFI-kin knives, IMO.

Anybody got anything related to Queensryche ???

Dr. Davis, telephone please...

Only ever used it in cooking.

But then again, I don't drink!

Probably why my Infi collection is so reasonable and remains at 5 pieces!
